Chris Aslanian and Justin Scott combined for 11 goals to lead Hobart to a 19-9 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's lacrosse action Tuesday at the Demske Sports Complex. Scott recorded a game-high six goals and Aslanian chipped in five goals and two assists to power a Statesmen (4-5) attack that established a season high for goals in the victory. Ryan Archer and Bryan Hancock pitched in two goals each for Hobart while Matthew Pedicine was 22-of-29 at the faceoff X. Senior Connor Kearnan tallied a season-high four goals and added two assists while sophomore Mathieu Boissonneault pitched in two goals and an assist for the Golden Griffins (4-4). Trailing 2-1 midway through first quarter, Hobart used a goal at the 5:59 mark from Stanny Gilbertson to tie the game at 2-2 and ignite a 5-1 run that gave the Statesmen a 6-3 lead after one. The teams traded goals for a majority of the second quarter before Hobart took advantage of a goal from Aslanian and a pair of tallies from Scott during the final 1:35 of the frame to build a 11-6 advantage at the halftime break. The second half saw the teams keep pace with each other until a man-up marker from Archer at the 1:32 of the third sparked the Statesmen to a 5-0 run that allowed them to build a 10-goal lead, 18-8, with 5:24 to play. The teams exchanged goals in the last minute of regulaton to determine the final margin. Senior Liam Ganzhorn recorded 11 saves in goal for Canisius. Sam Lucchesi finished with five saves for Hobart, four of which came during the fourth quarter. Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments "Hats off to Hobart for its effort this evening. They executed their game plan really well and we unfortunately did not. We thought we had a good game plan, but it did not come together throughout all phases of the field: offense, defense and in special teams/faceoffs. It was a good chance to battle this evening; now we go back to work and get ready for a big conference game Saturday at Marist. "When you're not winning the faceoff battle, the biggest challenge is to get a big stop on defense and get the ball down the field to allow your defense to catch its breath. When we took care of the ball tonight, we were able to shoot the ball very well. However, we had too many unforced turnovers, which put our defense back on its heels. We need to do a better job of taking that burden off the defense." Game Notes • Hobart out-shot Canisius by a 46-19 margin on Tuesday, highlighted by a 16-2 margin in the third quarter. • The Statesmen won 24-of-31 faceoffs on Tuesday, including 11-of-13 draws contested in the second half. • Canisius was held to single-digit goals for just the second time this season with its nine-goal effort on Tuesday. • Senior Connor Kearnan recorded his third hat trick of the season and 16th of his career with his four-goal effort on Tuesday. • Kearnan moved pass Scott Ronson (1994-97) into sole possession of 10th place on the program's all-time scoring chart with his six-point effort on Tuesday as he has amassed 138 points during his Canisius career. • Kearnan also moved into ninth place on the program's single-season assists chart as his two assists on Tuesday now gives him 27 helpers this season. • Sophomore Holden Garlent recorded his first assist of the season with a helper on classmate Mathieu Boissonneault's goal in the third quarter. • Senior Liam Ganzhorn recorded double-digit saves for the fifth time this season and 19th time in his career with his 11-save effort on Tuesday. Up Next • Canisius returns its focus to MAAC play Saturday when it travels to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for a Noon matchup with Marist.
