The Stevenson University men's lacrosse team outscored previously unbeaten Hood College 13-1 in the second half en route to a 21-5 MAC Commonwealth victory in the conference opener for both schools Wednesday night at Mustang Stadium. Stevenson's (2-6, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) Seth Thornton won the opening faceoff and went in to score eight seconds in to give the Mustangs the 1-0 lead. Gray McKee scored 1:02 into the game to double the hosts' lead. JT Thelen scored a man-up goal at the 9:02 mark, with Cam Leydig assisting. Hood (7-1, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth) got on the board at the 7:26 mark on a Kyle Scott goal. Thelen scored again at the 6:44 mark to make it 4-1. The Mustangs carried the 4-1 lead into the second quarter. Grayson Zubradt scored for the Blazers 49 seconds into the second quarter. The Mustangs scored twice in a 22-second span, with McKee scoring at 11:47, then Leydig recording a man-up goal at the 11:25 mark off an assist by Ethan Christensen. Back-to-back man-up tallies by Hood pulled them within two 2:48 before intermission. With time winding down, a save by Stevenson goalie Marc Poust was picked up by Dominic DeFazio, who raced the length of the field and dished the ball to Tyler Sullivan, who scored his first career goal with 15 seconds left. Stevenson won the ensuing faceoff, and after calling timeout with five seconds to go, McKee beat the buzzer with his third goal of the game to put the Mustangs on top 8-4 at the break. Jacob Tatum scored six seconds into the second half with Thornton assisting after winning the opening faceoff. Thelen cashed in on a man-up opportunity at the 11:33 mark, then Shane Ford scored his fourth goal of the season to make it 11-4 with 9:27 on the clock. McKee scored off an assist from Thelen with 8:45 remaining. Stevenson rattled off four goals in a span of 1:14 to take a 16-4 lead on another McKee tally with 4:11 to go in the quarter. After the Blazers got one back at the 2:14 mark, Lewis Anania scored with 42 seconds left to make it 17-5 after three quarters. Ford scored again at the 13:07 mark, followed by freshman Connor Nelson's first collegiate goal at 12:27. Scott Mitchell scored his first goal of the season with 10:01 remaining. Ford closed out the scoring with just over four minutes remaining, with Nelson notching an assist. Tyler Steinberg and Shane Silk combined to post a fourth-quarter shutout. Stevenson had 11 players score a goal and 13 players record a point. McKee finished with five goals and an assist, while Thelen recorded four goals and an assist. Ford tallied three goals and an assist. Christensen notched a goal and four assists while Leydig added a goal and two assists. Thornton registered two goals and an assist and went 17-22 on faceoffs while picking up 13 ground balls. Poust made eight saves through the first three quarters, while Steinberg made three stops in the first 12:49 of the final frame. Josh Brannan picked up four ground balls while DeFazio had three. Stevenson, which entered the game 10th nationally in fewest turnovers per game, had just four for the second half and 12 in the game. The Mustangs were 3-5 in man-up situations while the Blazers went 2-5. Stevenson outshot Hood 39-9 over the final 30 minutes and 65-27 for the contest, with the 65 shots a season high. The hosts won 21 of the game's 29 faceoffs. Thornton's goal eight seconds into the game was the quickest by a Stevenson player to start a game since Stephen Banick scored seven seconds in against Albright on May 4, 2016. Stevenson improved to 49-0 all-time in MAC Commonwealth regular season play and 61-0 including the conference tournament. The Mustangs won their 22nd straight game in which they scored 13 or more goals. Dominic DeFazio found Tyler Sullivan in transition late in the first half for Sullivan's first goal of the season. Stevenson stays in conference Saturday, hosting Albright in a 7 pm MAC Commonwealth contest at Mustang Stadium.
