Colgate added more résumé material to its early season bonafides by doing something that hadn't been done around these parts in quite a while. The Raiders beat Cornell. Griffin Brown scored a career-high six goals and Colgate defeated the Big Red at home for the first time in 54 years with a 14-11 decision here Saturday. Not since 1997 had the Raiders tasted victory of any kind against their Central New York rivals, and not since 1964 had Colgate claimed a home victory over Cornell. But the Raider offense kept the throttle down for all 60 minutes and scored no fewer than three goals in any quarter. The game was tied 4-4, 7-7 and 10-10 at the quarter breaks. But that's when Colgate's domination at the faceoff-X finally paid dividends and Brown caught fire. From 0:19 of the third quarter until the 9:36 mark of the fourth, Brown scored four consecutive times to turn a 10-9 deficit into a 13-10 lead. The first goal was unassisted and then Nicky Petkevich turned into Brown's personal valet with – Bam! Bam! Bam! – three pinpoint assists. 32784Collin Orr won 22 of 29 faceoff attempts, including five of six in the critical fourth quarter to help Colgate maintain possession as the minutes evaporated. The Raiders peppered Cornell goalkeeper Christian Knight with 10 shots in the fourth quarter to only three on the other end for the Big Red. Shots in the second half were 21-10 Raiders. Colgate's defense and riding game also were impressive, limiting Cornell to just 4-of-9 on clears in the second half and forcing six of their nine turnovers in the final 30 minutes. In addition to Brown's six goals and one assist, Joe Delaney contributed a hat trick and one assist while Petkevich scored twice to go with four assists. Cornell had won 12 straight in the series overall and was 23-1 against the Raiders since last losing in Hamilton, 12-4 back in 1964. Colgate's only win in that stretch was 9-6 in Ithaca in 1997.
