LAKELAND, FL - Tyler Kopen scored six goals and 11 different players found the back of the net as Florida Southern College men's lacrosse routed visiting Alabama-Huntsville, 21-10, on Thursday at Bryant Stadium.
The Moccasins (5-3) raced out to a 6-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and never trailed as they picked up their third-straight win of the season, and their first ever against the Chargers (3-5).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Florida Southern got on the board first when Colin Bayer took a pass from Seth Leonard and fired a shot past the UAH goalkeeper to give the Mocs the lead less than six minutes into the first quarter.
• The Chargers answered with their first goal of the game just 50 seconds later, but Cody Gray scored unassisted with 7:33 on the clock, and the Moccasins seized control by scoring six of the game's next seven goals to open up an 8-2 lead early in the second quarter.
• UAH would scored three times in the second quarter, but Florida Southern answered each time and went to the locker room with an 11-5 halftime lead.
• The Moccasins blew the game wide open in the third quarter, outscoring the Chargers 5-0 to build an insurmountable 16-5 lead. Kopen and Kyle Silverstein each scored twice in the third quarter.
• Alabama-Huntsville gained back some momentum when it reeled off four-straight goals to open the fourth quarter and close the gap to 16-9, but the Mocs scored five times in the final 10 minutes of action to cruise to victory.
• Florida Southern outshot UAH 51-24, picked up a whopping 45 ground balls, and went 2-for-2 in extra-man opportunities. Each team won 16 faceoffs, and Florida Southern was 19-of-23 in clear opportunities.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• Florida Southern improved to 42-30 all-time at Bryant Stadium. The 21 goals are the most the Moccasins have scored since a 21-15 victory over Adams State on March 22, 2015.
• Kopen finished with six goals on 11 shots and tallied two assists. Bayer, Cody Dyer, Kevin Dyer, Nick Gutmann and Silverstein scored two goals each.
• Bayer and Joe Appio each had two assists, while Austen Lison picked up nine ground balls and caused six turnovers. Matt Lalli made six saves in goal.
• The win marked Florida Southern's first victory over the Chargers. UAH is in its second year as a men's lacrosse program.
