PHILADELPHIA – On a cold rainy evening in University City, the Dragons came up just short in the closing seconds and fell to Saint Joseph's, 10-9, at Franklin Field. Jack Mulcahy had two goals and three assists, but his shot in the closing seconds was saved by Mike Adler as the Hawks escaped with the win in the opening game of the Philly 4 Lacrosse Classic. The Hawks (5-1) picked up their fourth-straight win, while the Dragons fell to 2-3. The Dragons trailed for the majority of the contest but were always within striking distance. Trailing by two entering the fourth, Drexel cut the lead to one when Mulcahy found Ryan Genord who rifled home a shot for his 16th goal of the year. Matt Bohmer answered at the 8:40 mark before Matthew Varian set up Reid Bowering on the man-up with five minutes to go, making it a 9-8 game. For Bowering it was his third goal of the night. On the ensuing face-off, Zach Cole won it clean for the Hawks and beat Ross Blumenthal to make it a two-goal game once again. Wade Shervin rocketed a shot from the alley into the back of the net with just 3:36 to play to make it 10-9. The Dragons had a few chances before the Hawks took over. Saint Joseph's had the ball with the shot clock off. Drexel pressed and the Hawks had an open net, but the shot hit the post, giving Drexel one last chance. The Dragons called timeout with 13 seconds remaining, but Mulcahy's shot was stopped and the Hawks prevailed. Drexel trailed for the entire first half before taking their first and only lead midway through the third quarter. Bowering tied it up at the 7:49 mark of the third and less than two minutes later, Varian put the Dragons up, 6-5. The lead didn't last long. The Hawks evened it up when Levi Anderson found Matt with 4:29 to play in the third for his second of the night. Nine seconds later, Bohmer completed the hat trick as the Hawks took the 7-6 lead. Saint Joseph's added another in the closing seconds of the period to take an 8-6 lead heading into the fourth. Saint Joseph's took and early 4-1 lead in the game. Drexel's offense looked better late in the quarter and scored three of the next four to head into the locker room down by just a goal. Mulcahy had both of his goals during that stretch, while Bowering had the other. Drexel outshot the Hawks, 51-35, despite winning just seven face-offs. Cole, who came into the game leading the nation in face-off percentage was 16-for-23. Turnovers were an issue for both teams in the nasty conditions. Saint Joseph's turned it over 24 times, while Drexel added 15. Will Stabbert and Sean Quinn each forced four turnovers and Quinn had a career-high eight ground balls in the game. Drexel will conclude play in the Philly 4 Lacrosse Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons will play Villanova in a neutral site game at Saint Joseph's beginning at 12 p.m. The Wildcats enter the week ranked 14th in the nation.
