ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy senior attack Joe Bossi (Skaneateles, N.Y.) scored four goals, while junior Ben Horn (Mill Valley, Calif.) and sophomore Steve Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) each chipped in three to lead the Midshipmen to a 13-8 Patriot League win over Hobart Tuesday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. With the win, Navy improved to 4-1 and is undefeated in conference action at 3-0, while the Statesmen dropped to 2-2 and lost their first league contest (2-1).

"I thought Hobart played very well in the first quarter," said Navy head coach Richie Meade. "They shot the ball exceptionally well. But in the second half, I thought we slowed them down and got some breaks. We had some breaks in the first half, but we didn't take advantage of them."

Hobart jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first quarter on back-to-back goals by Mike Conklin and Brian Joy just four minutes into the contest.

The Mids finally got on the scoreboard when Navy keeper Matt Russell (Madison, Conn.) threw an outlet pass to Steve Looney near mid-field and Looney ran it straight to the goal to narrow the gap to 2-1.

Hobart, however, scored less than 19 seconds later, taking advantage of a hold called on Navy team captain Thomas Morris (Alexandria, Va.). Joy scored on the EMO, his second-consecutive goal for the Statesmen. Chris Scanlon tacked on another goal to Hobart's lead when Mark Williamson found him open with 6:46 to play in the first quarter.

Navy closed the first quarter on an unassisted Matt Midura (Ellicott City, Md.) goal at the 1:15 mark, as Navy trailed 4-2. The second quarter was nearly even with Hobart notching a pair of goals, both by Williamson, and Navy produced a trio of goals. Down by just a goal (6-5), Navy came out of the locker room looking to answer the challenge. The Mids went on to outscore Hobart, 8-2, in the second half, including 7-2 in the third quarter. The Mids scored back-to-back goals to open the third period, taking their first lead of the game (7-6) on a goal by rookie middie Billy Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) at the 11:51 mark. Hobart answered with a Nate Molinari goal a minute-and-a-half later to knot the score at 7-7.

Bossi scored back-to-back goals at 9:36 and 8:19 to put the Mids up for good. Navy outshot Hobart, 42-29, and ironically, shots were nearly the same in the second half (Navy 18, Hobart 14). Navy won the face-off battle, claiming 14 of the 25 draws with junior Chris Pieczonka (Hamburg, N.Y.) taking 10 wins for the Mids. Hobart's John Soden was 11 for 25.

The Mids return to action Saturday when they face Colgate in Orlando, Fla. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. and will be played on the campus of the University of Central Florida.
