Freshman Chris Gray matched a program record with seven points, but the Boston University men's lacrosse team suffered a 16-9 setback at Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. HOW IT HAPPENED Bucknell (5-2, 3-1 PL) got on the board first, but Gray assisted on the next three scores, finding Jack Wilson twice along with James Burr as BU (4-4, 0-3 PL) took a 3-1 lead. Gray continued to punish the Bison defense, netting back-to-back goals make it a 5-2 game midway through the first quarter. Bucknell answered with a pair of scores of its own before Burr netted his second score of the day and Hayden Ruiz snapped the back of the net with three seconds left, sending the Terriers ahead 7-4 at the end of the first. Gray posted his hat trick just 25 seconds into the second quarter to give BU its largest lead of the game. Following back-to-back scores by the Bison, Wilson push the lead back to three, 9-6. The Bison tallied the final goal of the half as the Terriers held the upper hand at 9-7 heading into the locker room. BU struggled in the third quarter, turning the ball over eight times and tallied just one shot on goal. Bucknell fired on all cyclinders in the second half, finding the back of the net on nine of its 10 shots on goal as it handed BU its third conference defeat. GRAY CONTINUES HIS TERRIFIC DEBUT SEASON WITH RECORD DAY Gray matched the program record for points in a game with seven on Saturday, all of which came in the first half. The freshman standout recorded his third hat trick and second four-assist game of his career to match Jack Wilson and Cal Dearth's single-game mark of seven points. Dearth was the last Terrier to post a seven-point effort, doing so on April 17, 2015. Gray has now tallied a team-high 31 points thanks to 14 goals and a team-best 17 assists. DÉJÀ VU Saturday marked the second straight season that Bucknell reeled off eight straight goals. BU held a 5-4 lead late in the second quarter in the 2017 matchup, but Bucknell scored eight straight goals en route to a 12-6 victory last year at Nickerson Field. GAME NOTES Bucknell's Will Sands assisted on five of the Bisons nine scores in the second half. NEXT UP: HARVARD BU remain on the road as it closes out non-conference play at Harvard on Tuesday, March 20. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen live on NESN.
