The University of Scranton scored seven of the first eight goals in Sunday's home opener at Weiss Field, the Royals' first-ever game at its new home field, on its way to a 16-6 victory over King's in non-conference men's lacrosse action.
Senior Tim Dolan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) scored four goals and dished out two assists, junior Quinn Killeen (Berkeley Heights, N.J./New Providence) netted three goals to go along with one helper, junior Michael Elefonte (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) added two goals and two assists, and junior Mike Modesti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) scored twice as the Royals moved to 2-0 on the young season.
Scranton scored twice in the final 3:13 of Sunday's opening quarter to hold a 3-1 edge at the end of the first 15 minute period before scoring four straight goals to open the second stanza to claim a six-goal cushion. The Royals held a 7-2 lead at halftime after King's (0-2) netted the final goal of the half with just over three minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Scranton pushed its lead to 9-2 with the first two markers of the third quarter before the Monarchs scored three of the final four goals of the frame to cut the host's lead to 10-5 heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation.
The Royals quelled any hopes of a comeback for King's with a pair of goal in the first 2:09 of the fourth quarter, the first of five straight goals that pushed Scranton's lead to a comfortable, 15-5 with 6:11 left on the clock. Both teams netted a goal apiece in the final 5:12 of the contest to close out the scoring.
Juniors Connor Kirkwood (Millburn, N.J./St Peter's Prep) and Brett Krause (Bridgewater, N.J./St. Joseph's Metuchen), Joseph Brancato (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown), sophomore Collin Purdy (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough), and freshman Steve Apicella (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) all scored a goal apiece in the win.
Freshman T.J. Grogan (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) made eight saves in nearly 54 minutes of action to post his second win in as many days.
Defensively, junior Gordon Paul (Ocean, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) collected a game-high three caused turnovers to go along with nine ground balls while Purdy led all players with 12 ground balls while winning 20 of 25 face-offs.
The Royals, who converted both of their extra-man opportunities on the afternoon, held a 61-25 advantage in shots for the game along with a 53-30 lead in the fight for ground balls.
Scranton welcomes DeSales to Weiss Field on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup starting at 4 p.m.
