Fairfield University Men's Lacrosse picked up its first win of 2018 on Saturday afternoon with an 11-6 victory at Saint Joseph's. Three Stags recorded three points on the day, including a hat trick for Brendan Quinn. With the win, Fairfield improves to 1-1 on the young season. Saint Joseph's drops to 0-1. In addition to Quinn's three goals – the first three of his career – Dylan Beckwith handed out three assists and Colin Burke notched three points by way of a goal and two helpers. Taylor Strough added the first two points of his Fairfield career with a goal and an assist, and Joe Rodrigues also recorded one goal and one assist. Rounding out the attack were single goals from Drew Murray, Travis Ford, Charlie Curran (first career goal), Jack Brennan and Will Fox. In addition to his first career goal, Fox was dominant at the faceoff X to keep the Fairfield offense on the field. The senior went 17-for-21 and collected 14 ground balls to match the known program record set by Fairfield and MLL faceoff standard bearer Peter Vlahakis '04. Vlahakis went 18-for-27 on the dot with 14 ground balls in a 14-9 win at Holy Cross on Feb. 23, 2002. The goals for Brennan and Strough this afternoon were man-up as the Stags went 2-for-4 on extra-man opportunities. Burke assisted on both man-advantage tallies. Defensively, Fairfield held the host Hawks to their lowest scoring output in 12 games dating back to last season. The Stags forced 14 Saint Joseph's turnovers with seven different players recording a caused turnover, and held the Hawks to a 1-for-5 day on extra-man chances. Sean McKee earned his first career win in goal with 12 saves to go along with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Mike Rastivo and Kyle Cain each potted two goals for the Hawks. Cain also distributed an assist, while Chris Blewitt had a pair of helpers. Mike Adler made 10 stops in the cage for Saint Joseph's. The Stags are back at it next Saturday, Feb. 24, for a noon faceoff at #7 Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights took their first loss of 2018 this afternoon, falling by a count of 9-7 at #12 Army West Point. Action returns to Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium on Tuesday, Feb. 27 when the Stags host in-state foe Hartford at 3 p.m. The Hawks lost their season opener today – a 14-12 setback at St. John's – and will host Bryant next weekend before visiting Fairfield.
