The University of Scranton had a three-game win streak snapped on Wednesday evening at Cortland, falling to the Red Dragons 19-6 in non-conference men's lacrosse action.
The Red Dragons (5-3), who are receiving votes in the latest USILA national top-25 poll, used a nine-goal run in the first half to take control against the Royals, who slipped to 5-5 on the season with the loss.
Sophomore Jalen Holmes (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), who finished with a team-leading three points on two goals and one assist, opened the scoring just over two and a half minutes into Wednesday's game to give Scranton the early lead, but Cortland scored six unanswered goals to hold a 6-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The Red Hawks kept their runs going with the first three tallies of the second quarter before a man-up goal by sophomore Brian Dignen (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) snapped the host's run and made it a 9-2 game with 7:04 remaining in the opening half. Cortland scored twice in the final 2:44 of the frame though to hold an 11-2 advantage at halftime.
The Red Hawks pushed their lead to 14-2 by potting the first three goals of the third quarter before the Royals closed the period on a three-goal run of their own as freshman Mike Bouhall (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook), Holmes, and junior Michael Elefonte (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) found twine to make the score 14-5 heading into the final period.
Cortland outscored the visitors 5-1 in the final stanza to finish out the game with Bouhall netting his second goal of the contest in the quarter for Scranton.
Sophomore Shayne Fallon (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) made a career-high 16 saves in 45 minutes of action in Scranton's cage. Freshman T.J. Grogan (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and senior Matt Grilli (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) both made two stops while splitting time in the fourth quarter between the pipes for the Royals.
Freshman Christopher Coico (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) finished with a team-high five groundballs for the Royals in the loss.
Cortland finished the evening with a 73-32 advantage in shots and held a 49-29 lead in groundballs for the contests. The Red Dragons also won 22-of-29 face-offs and were plus-10 (13-23) in turnovers on the evening.
Scranton will host Stockton on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference tilt starting at 1 p.m. at Weiss Field.
