Trailing 6-3 late in the second quarter, Scranton outscored the Catholic University men's lacrosse team 8-1 over the final 31:44 en route to an 11-7 victory over the Cardinals Saturday at Carlini Field on Senior Day. Catholic (8-6, 4-1 LC) suffered its first loss in the last six Landmark Conference contests and is now in second place in the conference standings with one game remaining. The Cardinals outshot the Royals 48-34, but Scranton won 14-of-22 faceoffs and held a 35-22 advantage in ground balls as it won its fourth-straight and improved to 5-2 on the road this season. Freshman Joey Rockovich finished with two assists while freshman Sean Baudo had one goal and one assist. Junior Alex Mulyk made seven saves, five of which came in the first half as the Royals outscored the Cards 7-1 in the second. Both teams exchanged goals over the first 15 minutes and the game was tied at 3-3 after the first quarter. Catholic opened the second with three consecutive goals by Baudo, junior Mark Tocchio and freshman Cameron Dunn to take its largest lead of the game, 6-3, with 1:44 remaining in the first half. However, Quinn Killeen scored the first of his three goals for Scranton with just 38 seconds left before halftime. Coming out of the break, the Royals (9-6, 4-0 LC) scored five consecutive goals with Killeen adding two more to go along with one assist as they led 8-6 after three. Scranton scored four unanswered goals in the third and outshot the Cardinals 11-5 while holding a 12-4 advantage in ground balls and winning 4 of 5 faceoffs. The Royals opened the fourth with a man-up tally at 7:46 before Catholic finally got back on the board three minutes later when junior defenseman Griffin Smith netted his fourth goal of the season. The goal snapped a 27:33 scoreless streak or the Cardinals who trailed by just two with 4:11 to play. Nevertheless, Scranton won the final three faceoffs and Catholic never had another possession as it fell for the first time in three games on Carlini Field. Junior Charlie Kraemer finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Cardinals who totaled 11 caused turnovers as a team, one short of their season high set against No. 15 Christopher Newport on March 16. Catholic wraps up its 2019 regular season next Thursday, April 18 with a Landmark Conference contest at Susquehanna. Opening faceoff is at 4 p.m.
