After a strong 7-0 start, the Army West Point men's lacrosse team topped Lafayette 13-4 on the road Saturday to open Patriot League contests at 1-0. The Black Knights were led by AJ Barretto's nine saves and the team's 11 caused turnovers. Lafayette was held scoreless for the first 35:07 of play. David Symmes and Nick Santorelli both posted two goals in the win, while Conor Glancy notched two assists. HIGHLIGHTS & GAME NOTES Army is now 1-0 in the Patriot League and 37-0 all-time against Lafayette. The Black Knights had 11 different goal scorers in today's game and six of the 13 goals were assisted. Nate Jones, Sean O'Brien, Austin Colvin, Glancy, Nicholas Garofano, Matt Manown, Alex Alacqua, Connor DeWitt and Miles Silva all recorded a goal for the Cadets. In the assist column were Symmes, Jones, O'Brien and Jon LaMonica. LaMonica, Symmes, Jones and Johnny Surdick each picked up four ground balls in the effort. Surdick led the team with two caused turnovers. Paul Newbold made a save in the final 3:48 for Army. The senior class now boasts 36 wins in their careers on the banks of the Hudson. Army outshot Lafayette 43-25 and held a 39-35 advantage in ground balls. Today's 6-0 lead at halftime was the fewest goals against this season for Army. It is the second time this season that Army held its opponent scoreless in the second quarter, and has allowed just four all season in that 15 minute span. It was the second straight season that the Black Knights allowed just four from the Leopards. TURNING POINT The Black Knights got off to a 7-0 start in the game not allowing a Leopards goal until 9:23 of the third quarter. HOW IT HAPPENED The Black Knights and Leopards had a back-and-forth battle with the game knotted at 0-0 until halfway through the first quarter. After killing off a minute penalty, Symmes got Army on the board at 7:46 in the opening quarter. The Leopards kept the Cadets at bay for almost the rest of the frame, but Army scored with seven seconds to go to gain momentum going into the second when Glancy found Santorelli on top of the crease. The Black Knights went on a 4-0 run in the second quarter to pad their lead to 6-0. DeWitt, Symmes and Manown scored unassisted goals in the stretch, while Jones and O'Brien worked together for a quick stick goal. To start the third, Symmes set up Jones for a behind the back goal. The Leopards netted their first of the game at the 9:23 mark of the third quarter cutting the Black Knights' lead to 7-1. This sparked a two goal run for Lafayette, but Army responded with three-straight of its own to pad its lead at 10-2. O'Brien notched a goal and assist in the run, while Glancy had a successful lefty crease roll and Alacqua scored for the Black Knights. With 13 seconds remaining in the third, LaMonica had a full-field assist when he threw the ball to Army's offensive zone and Garofano picked it up and successfully shot around Anastos. The Cadets outscored the Leopards 2-1 in the final quarter with Santorelli and Glancy connecting low to high once again and Silva scoring his first of the year. UP NEXT The Black Knights will return home next weekend to host Lehigh at Michie Stadium. The game will begin at 1 p.m.
