The Lafayette men’s lacrosse team finished up its 2018 campaign on Friday evening at Fisher Stadium, dropping a 17-9 contest at the hands of Colgate on Senior Night. Prior to the contest, the Leopards honored their nine-member senior class for their contributions and dedication to the program over the last four seasons. Senior co-captain Will McCarthy went out strong with four goals on the night to lead all scorers. Junior Conor Walters netted a hat trick, while senior George Cloud scored his first career goal for Lafayette. The Leopards were in control early, winning the opening quarter by a 3-1 score on a pair from McCarthy and a slithery finish from sophomore Zane Crandall. The second period changed the game, though, as Colgate dominated to the tune of six straight tallies to take the game into the break with a 7-3 advantage. Lafayette didn’t have an answer for the Raiders’ offense in the second half as every Leopard goal was followed by at least two from the opposing side. Colgate led 13-7 at the end of three and rode out the final 15 minutes to secure the 17-9 victory. Playing their final games for the Maroon and White were Alex Mezey, Matt Close, Scott McAvoy, McCarthy, Cloud, James Roberts, Henry Vido, Josh Davis and Luke Smith. The Leopards finished their 2018 season with an overall record of 3-12, going 0-8 in conference action. Junior Jonathan Anastos was able to manage eight saves between the pipes, while Vido allowed two goals in his 7:47 of play to end the contest. On the other side, Connor Mullen stopped nine shots for the visitors in his 56:48 of play to move to 5-4 on the year. Shots finished at 41-32 in Colgate’s favor, while ground balls also went the Raiders’ way, 35-23. Colgate won 16-of-28 at the faceoff X and converted on four of its six man-up opportunities. Walters will lead a rising senior class into the offseason as he finished his junior year atop the team in scoring and assists with 28 goals and 21 helpers. Zack Merle, Connar Dehnert, Sam Friedman, Jake Korus, Josh Hubbard, Jack Lydon, Luke Cummings, Jeff Sikorsky, Sean Andrews and Anastos will join him as the next leaders for Lafayette men’s lacrosse into the 2019 schedule.
