Freshman Jacqueline Glassey (Kildeer, Ill.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal that propelled the University of Akron women's lacrosse team to an 12-11 triumph past Youngstown State (0-1-0, 0-1-0 MAC) in the Mid-American Conference opener for both schools on Friday, March 5 at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field. "First home win and first MAC win," Akron head coach Christy Mitchell commented. "We have great momentum and have not even reached our full potential. We are gaining IQ with every game and I can't wait for the next one." Redshirt sophomore Kaylee Riggins (Zionsville, Ind) directed the Zips' offensive attack registering a team-high three goals on the afternoon. Redshirt freshman Kaija Kunttu (Zionsville, Ind.) turned in a two-goal afternoon, while Akron (2-1-0, 1-0-0 MAC) garnered one tally apiece from freshman Noelle Boyd (Murrysville, Pa.), redshirt junior Anna Dennison (Fallston, Md.), Glassey, redshirt freshmen Alexis Kiefer (West Chicago, Ill.) and Abby McMullen (Medina, Ohio) and freshman Madeline Shewbridge (Cincinnati, Ohio). Freshman Ashley Lapp (Missouri City, Texas) notched 10 saves for the third consecutive contest for the Zips in net, while Elicia Wells pulled in 13 stops for the Penguins. Akron posted a 40-34 edge in shots in the match, including a 25-21 margin in shots on goal. Akron opened the match scoring the initial three goals on the strength of tallies from Kiefer, an own goal and the first of three goals on the day for Riggins. Youngstown State fired back a salvo of their own netting a trio of goals to square the match at three at the 17:15 mark of the first half. Kunttu put the Zips back ahead, 4-3, with a goal in the 22nd minute (21:45), before back-to-back scores from Vaudry gave the Penguins a 5-4 lead at halftime. Akron opened the second half with scores from Boyd (2:58) and Kunttu (3:37) to regain the advantage, 6-5. The two sides exchanged the next three goals before the Zips went ahead to stay on the first collegiate goal for Glassey at the 15:32 mark of the second half. Akron extended its lead to 10-7 following goals from McMullen and Riggins in the 18th minute. The Penguins continued to battle in their first match in program history cut the deficit to 10-9 with 7:47 left in regulation.
