Facing their fourth ranked team in February, Jacksonville University men's lacrosse team held the lead for the majority of the game against No. 4 Ohio State, but a Buckeye goal with 1.8 seconds remaining forced the 2018 Moe's Lacrosse Classic into overtime, as the Dolphins ultimately fell in a heartbreaker, 12-11, Sunday afternoon at D.B. Milne Field. Freshman Jeremy Winston had a breakout performance on attack, as the Dallas, Texas native recorded five of the Dolphins' 11 goals – with all but one of his tallies unassisted. Classmate and close defenseman Dixon Smith caused four turnovers, many in crucial situations, and scooped up four ground balls for an impressive performance. "There are no words to ease the pain of today for our staff and the guys. For more than 59 minutes, we went toe-to-toe with the number four team in the country," stated head coach John Galloway. Winston's fifth and final goal, and what looked to be the Dolphins' insurance tally, came with 2:11 remaining in regulation to give Jacksonville an 11-9 lead. Held scoreless through 58 minutes thanks to Smith's lockdown defense, Buckeye All-American attackman Tre Leclaire managed to bring the visitors within one, 11-10, with 1:34 to play in the fourth. In what appeared to be an upset in the making, Jacksonville had possession with 25.0 seconds on the clock. A resilient Buckeye defense checked the ball loose and dished to Leclaire, who found a miracle with 1.8 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. Junior goalkeeper Hunter Sells came up with an incredible save to stifle a point-blank shot from Leclaire 58 seconds into overtime, but it was Leclaire who found the game-winner from Logan Maccani less than a minute later with 1:46 showing to end the game. "They made a miraculous play at the end of the game, and that's what elite teams do. Hats off to Ohio State, but I couldn't be more proud of the 45 guys in our locker room. We had freshmen make plays all over the field. For Jeremy Winston to score five goals and Dixon Smith to shut out Leclaire in 6 v 6, that is a great sign of what is ahead." Sells finished the day with seven saves, including a stop on a behind-the-back shot in traffic in the third quarter, and picked up two ground balls in the loss. "Today didn't go our way, but this group is starting to believe. We will take the night to swallow this loss, and go get to work to play another top 20 team in Baltimore." Down 2-1 after the first quarter, the Dolphins (2-3) rattled off four straight to push Jacksonville to a 5-2 surge with 7:09 to go before halftime. An eye-catching mark from senior Ryan Beville – just 12 seconds after the Dolphins' opener from senior Eric Applegate (12:03) – lifted the Dolphins to their first lead, 3-2 lead. After he grabbed the ground ball off senior Hunter Forbes' faceoff win, Beville raced toward the cage and buried a shot. Despite a Buckeye goal that tied the game at 5 early on in the third quarter, the Dolphins answered back with three of their own and another pair from Winston. Senior McLean Chicquen (5:00) and freshman Gavin Dembeck (2:17) bookended an Ohio State goal to close out the third with the Dolphins at a 9-6 advantage. The Buckeyes posted three of the first four goals in the final period to come within one, 10-9, with 5:00 to go in regulation to set the stage for the dramatic finish. Beville tallied a game-high six ground balls and caused two turnovers, while Forbes finished .500 on faceoffs (13-26). Leclaire led the Buckeyes with three goals, while Matthew Smidt recorded three saves in the cage. The Dolphins return to action next Saturday, March 3 when they head north to face Vermont at Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn, Md. Opening faceoff is set for noon.
