Driving the goal in the final 10 seconds of overtime, junior attackman Jon Mazza scored the game-winning goal as the Towson University men's lacrosse team rallied past No. 13 Ohio State for a 7-6 win at Ohio Stadium. Towson (3-3) reached the overtime period as fellow junior Grant Maloof scored an extra-man goal with 1:16 to play in the fourth to tie the game at 6-6. Maloof and Mazza each scored twice as redshirt freshman Shane Brennan halted a career-best 16 shots. Thirteenth-ranked Ohio State (5-2) got two goals from Jack Jasinski. The Buckeyes out-shot the Tigers 40-19 in the game. How it Happened Mazza got the scoring started at the 9:12 mark of the first after the Towson defense weathered a three-minute defensive stand. The junior threw a low, hard shot that got past Buckeye keeper Matthew Smidt. Towson jumped up 2-0 after Maloof potted his first of the day on a man-up feed from Jean-Luc Chetner. The Tigers' extra-man unit went to work after Ohio State's Gale Thorpe took a one-minute slashing penalty. Coming down in transition, Zach Goodrich extended the run to 3-0 as he buried his second goal of the season. Jasinski scored with 1:45 left in the opening stanza to make it 3-1 after 15 minutes of play. The Buckeyes scored with 4:53 to play in the second to cut the Tiger lead down to one, 3-2, on an unassisted John Kelly goal. Colin Chell tied the game at 3-3 with 3:01 to play in the first half after Koby Smith was called for a slash. The Buckeyes grabbed a 4-3 lead at halftime as leading-scorer Tre Leclaire scored with 33 seconds left in the second quarter. Ohio State ran its scoring run to five unanswered with 5:31 to play in the third quarter on a goal from Thorpe, putting the Buckeyes up 5-3. Towson ended the run early in the fourth quarter as Chetner potted a goal at 12:17 of the final regulation period, cutting the Ohio State lead back to one, 5-4. Just 15 seconds later, Smith grabbed a ground ball off the ensuing faceoff and bulleted home the tying goal for the first marker of his career. The Buckeyes regained a one-goal lead at 3:31 of the fourth as Jasinski scored his second of the night, putting the hosts up 6-5. With 1:56 to play, Ohio State's Jeff Henrick was called for an illegal body check after cross checking Towson's Sid Ewell across the chest, setting up Towson's power play. On the extra-man, Chetner threw a dart over to Maloof as the latter hit a bounce shot from the top right wing to tie the game, setting up a second-straight overtime meeting between the teams at Ohio Stadium. The Tiger defense stymied Ohio State through the first 90 seconds of overtime before the Buckeyes' head coach Nick Myer called timeout. Out of the pause, Towson's defense continued to play well, forcing a turnover with 1:36 to play as the Tigers successfully cleared to set up a final offensive push. After a Timmy Monahan shot was blocked in front, the Tigers got the ball back as Mazza drove the net with 10 seconds to play. The junior split between two defenders, tip-toed the crease and beat Smidt to the far side of the goalmouth for the game-winning goal with 6.7 seconds left in the period. Behind the Numbers Towson got a career performance from Brennan, who turned aside 16 shots, besting his previous highwater mark of 14 set two weeks ago at No. 9 Loyola. He made seven saves over the final 35 minutes of play. Brennan finished the game with a 72.7 save percentage, stopping 16 of the 22 Buckeye shots on goal. The Tiger extra-man unit, which has struggled in the early portion of the season, went 2-for-3 on Saturday evening at The Horseshoe. Ohio State scored just one man-up goal on four chances. Ohio State won 11 of the game's 17 faceoffs. Towson rolled out two specialists as Alex Woodall went 5-for-14 and Steven Stillwell won one of his three chances. Towson cleaned up its possessions, turning the ball over just 12 times. The Tigers won their second-straight overtime game against the Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium, adding to a 10-9 overtime win back in 2016 with 10 seconds remaining in the extra stanza. Towson improved to 10-3 all-time in the Division I Era (1980) against opponents ranked 13th in the most recent USILA Coaches' Poll. It was the Tigers first win over a 13th-ranked team since topping UMBC 8-7 in 2006. Four of the last five meetings between the Tigers and Buckeyes have been decided by one goal. Towson halted a two-game Ohio State winning streak in the budding rivalry. Up Next For Towson Towson continues it's stretch through Murderer's Row next weekend as the Tigers host Duke University, which was ranked third in both the USILA Coaches' Poll and the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. Game time for the first meeting between the Tigers and Blue Devils since 2013 is slated for noon at Johnny Unitas Stadium. Saturday's game will be the program's annual Military Appreciation Day game. The Tigers lead the all-time series against Duke at 7-2, including a 1-1 mark in Towson's Division I Era.
