The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team lost its home opener on Saturday afternoon, 18-9 against Washington College (Md.). The Shoremen struck first, as senior Casey Grieves netted the first goal of the contest just under three minutes into action. Washington scored two more goals before junior midfielder Jordan Edwards got the Bobcats on the board with 6:07 left in the first quarter with his first goal of the season. Shortly after, junior Jimmy Lucas brought the Bobcats to within one with an unassisted goal, bringing the score to 3-2. The momentum shifted back to the Shoremen's side, as they scored two more goals, including Grieves' second goal of the day to take a 5-2 lead into the second quarter. Washington continued its run into the second quarter, scoring seven goals and holding the Bobcats scoreless, taking a 12-2 lead into the halftime locker room. Grieves led the Shoremen in the first half, scoring five goal and assisting on one. Cooper Sloan collected two goals and three assists in the game's first 30 minutes. To go along with Edwards' and Lucas' goals, first-year Matthew Ward added an assist for the Bobcats. FSU held a 10-4 faceoff advantage at the half, but Washington led the Bobcats in shots, 26-13 while staying out of the penalty box, while the Bobcats caused three penalties. The Bobcats halted the Shoremen run after Washington added a goal early in the second half by scoring two consecutive goals, the first coming from sophomore Jason Clinton on the extra-man advantage, and the second from senior attacker Jake Howarth. Grieves added his sixth goal of the contest with 8:53 on the clock for the Shoremen, but Ward responded shortly after with a goal of his own, bringing the score to 14-5. After another Washington score, the Bobcats scored back-to-back goals in the matter of 30 seconds, with both Ward and Howarth scoring their second goals of the game each, cutting the Frostburg deficit to eight with 4:24 left in the third frame. Overall in the third quarter, eight goals were scored between the two teams, five for the Bobcats, as the Shoremen took a 15-7 lead into the final 15 minutes of action. The Bobcats scored two goals in the fourth quarter, Clinton's second of the game and one from junior Michael Sipes, but the Shoremen added three of their own to win, 18-9. Ward, Howarth and Clinton each had a pair of goals for the Bobcats. Ward and Howarth each added eight shots, while Clinton shot the ball seven times and added an assist. Junior Sam Natvig won a game-high 15 faceoffs for FSU. Junior goalie Jack Marks saved 12 shots in the effort. Overall, The Bobcats held an 18-8 faceoff advantage and both teams collected 36 ground balls each. Washington held a one-shot lead over FSU, 42-21, but it also had 30 shots on goal against Frostburg's 20. The Bobcats (1-1) will head to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland to take on Eastern in a neurtral-site game on Tuesday, March 5.
