FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After earning his 100th career point, Max Tuttle provided the game-tying goal in waning time and netted the golden goal in an extra session to push the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team (4-1) past Providence (3-2), 10-9, Saturday afternoon at Campus Field. How it happened… Julian Garritano commenced scoring at Campus Field with the help of Landon Kramer to put SHU on the board in the opening quarter's 13th minute. The Friars responded firing off three uninterrupted goals in a two-minute span, before Garritano's second tally severed the streak. PC got one more tally in before the second-quarter began, 4-2. The second quarter's offense was equally divided with both teams pinning a trio of goals to their respective totals, as the Pioneers trailed two at the intermission. Pioneers' attack, Joe Saggese, recorded his first goal this season amid a 4-0 for SHU while Logan Liljeberg dished a pair of helpers in the span to put the lead back in the hosts' custody by the fourth quarter's onset, 8-7. The Friars' Evan McGreen blasted a go-ahead goal with 3:49 remaining in regulation, 9-8, prior to Tuttle blitzing a shot executed out of the break with under a minute left subsequently forcing the bonus period, 9-all. With momentum, Tuttle notched his 12th tally of the season, his third of the afternoon 1:17 into overtime crafting his way within striking distance for the winner, 10-9. The numbers… Tuttle has now amassed over 100 career points after tying a team-high three goals and adding a helper. He also corralled two ground balls. Garritano added a team-high three goals to his arsenal, sparked a Friar's miscue without committing one of his own. He also totaled four ground balls. Mike Calvagna and Jake Giaquinto were featured in faceoffs for SHU going 6-15 and 3-8, respectively. Saggese recorded a pair of tallies and picked up a pair of ground balls while Joseph Cipoletti and Kevin Cop also scored. Austin Pavone dictated SHU's defense with four caused turnovers and Matt Caracappa granted SHU two extra possessions. Brooks Dutton tallied the win in net, stopping 11 Friars' shot attempts and got to four balls off the turf. Noteworthy… The Pioneers are riding a three-game win streak. SHU is perfect at home, 2-0. The Pioneers 10 points scored marks the lowest offensive output in a SHU win since the squad knocked off Hobart, 8-7, on March 25, 2017. The 4-1 clip marks the best start to a season under head coach Jon Basti's direction. Up next… SHU gets its chance at Vermont on the road, Thursday, March 8 at noon.
