Marshal King scored off a feed from Reid Bowering 43 seconds into the second overtime as Drexel defeated Providence, 11-10, at Vidas Field on Saturday afternoon. Drexel's Jimmeh Koita won the face-off in the second overtime giving Drexel what would be the only possession of the frame. Bowering fed a streaking King, who fired a shot past Tate Boyce from about 10 yards out. It was King's 10th goal of the season and gave Drexel its second straight win. The Dragons led 9-8 entering the fourth quarter, but Damion Currie scored early in the period to even the score. Drexel would take the lead a few minutes later, as Nick Fox dodged a defender and netted his third goal of the contest with 10:50 to go in the game. The Dragons held on to the lead until the 4:43 mark when Nick Hatzipetrakos beat Chre Teitelbaum to even the score. Providence had two chances down the stretch to take the lead in regulation, but Teitelbaum came up big twice. He turned aside a shot by Nick Preston with just under three minutes and then foiled Hatzipetrakos from in close with 2:10 to go. Drexel had the final possession in regulation. Matt Varian came in from behind the net, but his shot hit the side of the cage and the teams went to overtime for the second straight season. Bowering and Varian each had five points for the Dragons. Bowering had his seventh career hat trick, with all three of his goals coming in the first half. Varian had three first half assists and two goals in the third quarter. Fox added three goals. Teitelbaum improved his record to 4-2 on the season and had 10 saves. Drexel fell behind by four goals in the first half as five different Providence players scored the first five goals of the game. Nick Shaw gave the Friars a 7-3 lead with three minutes to play in the opening half. The Dragons were able to trim the lead to two goals before the half. Bowering set up Fox for his first goal of the game with 2:09 remaining until intermission. After a Friar penalty, Varian fed Jake O'Donnell who was right in front of the cage. The senior turned around from points-blank range and found the far upper corner making it a 7-5 contest. Sean Leahy scored two goals and assisted on another for Providence. Ryan Nawrocki had a goal and two assists in a losing cause. Tate Boyce made 11 saves for the Friars. The Friars took advantage of Drexel's miscues, scoring on three of their four man-up opportunities. Drexel's Koita had his third straight solid outing at the face-off spot. The sophomore won 15 of his 26 attempts. He also had a team-high eight ground balls. The Dragons close their three game homestand on Saturday afternoon. Drexel will open Colonial Athletic Association conference play against UMass at Vidas Field beginning at 1 p.m.
