The Providence College men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 3/4 Denver, 13-6, in BIG EAST regular-season action on Saturday, April 21 in Providence, R.I. Providence fell to 5-9 overall (1-3 BIG EAST), while the Pioneers improved to 10-2 (4-0 BIG EAST). 1ST QUARTER: Denver connected on its first two shot attempts of the game to take a 2-0 lead through the first 2:05 of the game. The Friars made it a 2-1 game as Sean Leahey (Cranford, N.J.) connected on his team-best 23rd goal of the season, unassisted. The Pioneers closed out the opening quarter with a tally from Colton McCaffrey at the 1:22 mark to give Denver a 3-1 lead at the break. Providence out-shot Denver, 10-6, in the first 15 minutes of play. However, the Pioneers held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. 2nd QUARTER: Providence’s Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the second quarter just 1:22 into the action as he picked up a loose ball in front of the cage and converted his 20th goal of the season to get the Friars within one (3-2). Denver responded with back-to-back goals to push its lead to 5-2 with 7:08 left on the clock. The two teams were scoreless down the stretch as the Pioneers maintained their three-goal lead at halftime. 3rd QUARTER: Denver scored three-straight goals to start the third quarter and mounted an 8-2 lead with 11:31 remaining on the clock. Providence answered with back-to-back goals by Will Duncan (Bronxville, N.Y.) and Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.) to get within four (8-4). It marked Duncan’s first career goal, while McGreen notched the ninth of his rookie season. Denver halted the Friars’ momentum with goals by McCaffrey and Ted Sullivan at 2:57 and 1:44, respectively. Denver held a 10-4 lead heading into the final frame. 4th QUARTER: Denver opened the fourth quarter with three-consecutive goals to gain a 13-4 advantage. Hatzipetrakos followed with his second goal of the day – and 21st of the season – to get the Friars on the board in the quarter (13-5). McGreen picked up the assist on the play, marking the Friars first assist of the game. The Friars earned the game’s first extra-man opportunity with 3:15 remaining on the clock, and were able to cash in with a goal by Austin Goltz (Orchard Park, N.Y.) off a feed from McGreen to make the score 13-6. It marked Goltz’s 14th goal of the year and came at the 2:44 mark.
