Junior attackman Mike Weaver (Lititz, Pa. / Cedar Crest) tallied a career-best five points to help lead the 13th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 14-7 win over 14th-ranked Christopher Newport on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field. After the Captains (0-1) assumed a 1-0 lead on a goal by first-year attackman Alex Horgan at the 12:06 mark of the first quarter, the Generals (1-1) scored the game's next four goals to gain the upper hand early on. Senior midfielder Matt Huber (Great River, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) evened the score at 1-1 with 6:50 left in the quarter, and junior midfielder Jack Hodgson (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) won the ensuing faceoff and scored unassisted 13 seconds later for a 2-1 lead. Junior long-stick midfielder Conlan O'Hara (Delray Beach, Fla. / St. Andrew's) scored off a turnover in the midfield on a failed clear with 2:21 left in the period, and Weaver capped the run on a goal off an assist from junior midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) with 32 seconds left in the period. Two straight CNU goals made it a 4-3 game with 13:57 remaining in the half, but the Generals scored three of the next four goals, including a second from Weaver, for a 7-4 lead at the break. After the intermission, W&L received goals from Weaver and sophomore midfielder Stuart Greenspon (Aldie, Va. / Episcopal) in the opening three minutes and change to assume a five-goal lead (9-4) at the 11:25 mark. The Captains responded with two straight tallies themselves, but the Generals posted five scores in the final 17:02, including one goal and one assist from Weaver, to record the seven-goal victory. For the game, the Generals held advantages of 46-25 on shots, 34-25 on ground balls and 18-7 on faceoffs. Weaver finished with three goals and two assists to lead W&L in scoring. Senior attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) totaled two goals and two assists, while Greenspon and Hodgson registered two goals each. Hodgson also won 18-of-24 faceoffs and Hamill added a pair of assists. Senior defenseman John Broderick (Manhasset, N.Y. / Chaminade) notched three caused turnovers and sophomore goalkeeper Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) logged eight saves in a stout defensive effort for the Generals. Sophomore attackman Dylan Rice had two goals, while first-year midfielder Brady Altobello and sophomore midfielder Will Stockhausen recorded one goal and one assist each to lead CNU.
