The 14th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team jumped out to an 11-0 halftime lead and never looked back in claiming a 22-3 victory over Mary Washington on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field. The Generals (3-3) had 14 different players find the goal, including five players who scored multiple goals on the day. Neither team could dent the scoreboard until the Generals got things started with an unassisted goal by first-year attackman Garrett Mize (Dallas, Texas / St. Mark's) at the 6:03 mark of the first quarter. The Generals would go on to score three more tallies across the next 3:01 to carry a 4-0 lead into the second quarter. Sophomore attackman Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) did much of the damage, totaling two goals and one assist during the stretch. Once again neither team could generate scoring over the first seven minutes and change to start the second quarter, but once the Generals saw the ball slip by the goalie, the flood gates opened. W&L scored seven goals in the final 7:56 of the quarter to carry the 11-goal lead into the intermission. Six different players found rope in the half-ending run, led by sophomore attackman Austin Hudson's (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) two goals and one goal and one assist from sophomore midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy). Mulholland scored again just 44 seconds into the third period, before the Eagles (3-3) got on the board with a goal by senior attackman Chris White off an assist from senior midfielder Cole Hogan to make it 12-1. Senior attackman Robert Cooleen (Princeton, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) scored twice in the frame, as the Blue & White carried a 17-2 lead into the final period. The Generals scored the first five goals of the fourth quarter to cruise to the 19-goal victory. For the game, W&L out-shot the Eagles by a count of 52-25 and held a 43-35 edge on ground balls. The Generals also won 16-of-29 faceoffs and limited Mary Washington to 0-for-6 on EMO's. Taylor Witherell led the way with three goals and two assists for W&L. Cooleen and Mize chipped in three goals each, while Mulholland had two goals and one assist. Hudson scored two goals and senior attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) returned from injury to post one goal and two assists. Sophomore Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) started in goal and played the first 38:56 to earn the win. He stopped six shots with two goals allowed. He was spelled by junior Matt Lanigan (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Oratory Prep) and first-year Nick Spagnoletti (Madison, N.J. / Madison). Lanigan played 16:27 with three saves and one goal allowed. Spagnoletti played the final 4:37 and did not face a shot. White scored two goals to lead the Eagles on the offensive end. Three goalkeepers played for UMW, led by senior Billy Senicola, who took the loss after surrendering 14 goals with seven saves in 33:03 between the pipes. Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it opens ODAC play with a 1:00 pm home tilt against Randolph-Macon.
