Sophomore Brenden McCarthy registered a career-high nine points on five goals and four assists to power Mount St. Mary's to a 16-9 victory over Virginia Military Institute on Saturday at Waldron Family Stadium.
McCarthy's nine points were the most by a Mountaineer since Andrew Scalley tallied 10 in a game against Manhattan back in 2013. McCarthy leads Mount St. Mary's with 27 points (14g, 13a) on the season.
Stephano Mastro chipped in with a pair of goals and one assist to help pace the Mountaineers, and Chris DiPretoro, Jack Mangan and Joe Bethke added a goal and an assist each.
Rookie Luke Mutterer earned his second win in the cage for the Mount with a six-save performance.
The Mount (2-4) outshot VMI (1-2) by a 57-35 margin in the game and held a 42-30 advantage on ground balls. Sam Stephan and Alex Ulrich combined to go 17-for-27 in the faceoff circle.
The Mount opened a 4-2 advantage at the end of one quarter of play behind a pair of goals apiece from McCarthy and Mastro, but the Keydets were able to tie things up at 4-4 following tallies from Jon Fant and Wesley Sanders to begin the second period.
After not scoring for the opening 12-plus minutes of the second quarter, the Mount tallied four goals in the final 2:09 of the frame to re-take the lead. McCarthy notched three points (2g, 1a) during the late run, as the Mountaineers carried an 8-4 advantage into the half.
In a dominating third quarter, the Mount outshot the Keydets 22-9 and outscored them by a 6-1 margin to take a commanding lead. Six different Mountaineers netted a goal apiece in the frame, including senior C.J. Ciserano who scored the first of his career, as they extended it to a 14-5 advantage with one quarter remaining.
Mount St. Mary's registered two more goals in the fourth and closed out the 16-9 victory to improve to 2-4 on the year.
Wesley Sanders was VMI's leading scorer in the tilt with four goals, while Jon Fant added a pair. Bill Osteen made 16 saves in the losing effort in net.
The Mount stays in Emmitsburg for a matchup against Mercer next Saturday (March 10) at 11 a.m.
