Senior attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) tallied three goals and four assists to lead the 14th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 14-6 victory over Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. Sophomore midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) gave W&L an early lead when he scored unassisted just 49 seconds into the game. The Generals then added goals from first-year attackman Garrett Mize (Dallas, Texas / St. Mark's) and junior midfielder Jack Ware (Baltimore, Md. / Towson) over the next two minutes and change for a 3-0 lead at the 8:59 mark. The Yellow Jackets (4-2, 0-1) scored two of the next three goals to make it a 4-2 game with 4:21 left in the first quarter, but A.J. Witherell scored with 3:30 left in the period to jump-start a five-goal run featuring five different goal scorers that gave W&L a 9-2 lead with 3:30 left in the half. Randolph-Macon cut it to 9-3 on a goal by junior attackman Ryan Tiffey at the 2:24 mark, but the Generals scored twice in the final 1:33, including an A.J. Witherell goal with two seconds left to assume an 11-3 lead at the intermission. W&L scored three goals after the break, all assisted by A.J. Witherell, and the Yellow Jackets matched the Generals' second-half scoring for the 14-6 final score. The Blue & White held a 37-34 advantage in shots and a 35-25 edge in ground balls for the game. The Generals also won 16-of-24 faceoffs. Mulholland tallied two goals and one assist and Mize scored two goals to join A.J. Witherell among the W&L scoring leaders. Sophomore midfielder Stuart Greenspon (Aldie, Va. / Episcopal) notched one goal and one assist, while junior midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) added a pair of assists. Sophomore Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) was fabulous in goal, posting a career-high 17 saves with just five goals allowed in 53:17 between the pipes. Junior Matt Lanigan (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Oratory Prep) played the final 6:43, making one save with one goal allowed. Junior midfielder Jack Hodgson (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) won 14-of-17 faceoffs. Ryan Tiffey paced the Yellow Jackets with two goals. Junior attackman Colin DeSesa chipped in one goal and one assist. Senior goalkeeper Chris Cerrina played 53:17 in goal and made 13 saves with 13 goals allowed. He was spelled by first-year Tommy Kane, who allowed one goal with no saves. Washington and Lee will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to eighth-ranked Gettysburg for a 3:30 pm contest.
