LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) totaled five goals and two assists to lead the 16th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to an 18-4 victory over Bridgewater on Saturday evening at Wilson Field. Bridgewater (5-2, 0-2) opened the scoring just 1:02 into the contest when senior midfielder Jacob Clemmer scored unassisted in transition. W&L (5-4, 2-0) followed with unassisted goals by first-year attackman Garrett Mize (Dallas, Texas / St. Mark's) and A.J. Witherell, but the Eagles knotted the game at 2-2 on a goal by senior midfielder Hunter Callen with 10:29 left in the first quarter. A.J. Witherell fed sophomore attackman Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) for a goal with 9:34 left in the first quarter, igniting a 5-0 run that gave the Generals a 7-2 lead late in the first half. The Eagles ended the first-half scoring with :01 remaining on an unassisted goal by sophomore attackman Eric Husselbaugh. The Generals seized control of the contest with a six-goal run across the third and fourth periods to assume a 13-3 lead with 10:36 left in the game. A.J. Witherell scored twice during the run that put the game away. For the contest, W&L held advantages of 68-17 in shots, 45-21 in ground balls and 20-4 in faceoffs. The Blue & White also forced 25 BC turnovers and limited the Eagles to just 13-of-25 on clears. Mize, sophomore midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) and senior attackman Robert Cooleen (Princeton, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) each scored two goals to supplement A.J. Witherell's seven points. Witherell now has 161 goals and 101 assists for his career, becoming just the fourth player in program history with 100 goals and 100 assists. His 262 career points are just 29 away from breaking Matt Dugan's '01 school record of 290 points. Taylor Witherell added one goal, four caused turnovers and four ground balls, while sophomore Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) earned the win in goal, playing the opening 49:24 and making three saves with three goals allowed. Callen led the Eagles with one goal and one assist. Senior Hunter Bagby played all 60 minutes in goal for BC, totaling 20 saves with 18 goals allowed. Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Hampden-Sydney for a 1:00 pm contest.
