The Mount St. Mary's University men's lacrosse team rolled to a 16-3 win over Wagner in the regular season finale on Saturday, as the Mount celebrated Senior Day in style with the victory. Sophomore Brenden McCarthy notched a career-high 11 points on two goals and nine assists, as he tied the Mount St. Mary's program record for most assists in a single game. McCarthy played a part in each of the first six goals of the game for the Mount, and tallied eight of his 11 points in the first half of play. The sophomore's nine assists ties Greg Tolker, who tallied nine helpers on a pair of occasions, for most in a single game in program history. McCarthy also broke the Mount's previous Division I era record of seven assists, which was set by Casey Larkin against Ohio State in 1991. In addition, McCarthy's 11 points in the tilt are tied for sixth-most in a single game in Mount history. The Everett, Mass. native rounds out the season with 32 assists on the year, good for eighth-most in a season in program history. Prior to the contest, Mount St. Mary's honored Daniel Barber, C.J. Ciserano, Kyle Maxey, Mike Moynihan, Brian Reilly, Matt Vierheller, and Bennett Zaba with a ceremony as part of Senior Day, recognizing the contributions the seven seniors have made to both the program and the University throughout their careers at the Mount. Three other Mountaineers joined McCarthy with multi-goal efforts in the victory, including Stephano Mastro, who registered a career-high seven points on five goals and two assists. Chris DiPretoro added three goals and one helper, Henry Berg netted a pair of goals, and Zaba chipped in a goal and one assist in his final collegiate game to help pace the offense. The defense was also pivotal in the win for the Mountaineers as they held Wagner scoreless in the opening half, yielding just eight shots while forcing 13 turnovers in the first two quarters of play. Vierheller played well in the final game of his career, making five saves and posting a .625 save percentage in 52:47 of action to record the victory. The senior net minder rounds out his career with the seventh-most saves (383) and sixth-best goals against average (10.50) in program history. Sophomore Neil Roche took over in the Mount cage for the final seven-plus minutes of action and stopped three shots in his first career appearance. The Mount outshot Wagner by a 48-25 margin in the contest, and held a 39-27 advantage on ground balls. Rookie Sam Stephan won 15-of-23 faceoffs on the day and picked up 10 ground balls. The dominating victory by the Mountaineers wasn't enough to push them into playoff position, as Sacred Heart was able to secure the final playoff spot with a win over Hobart earlier in the day. McCarthy fueled the Mount's early run in the opening quarter with assists on the first four goals of the game. He followed with his first goal of the contest at the 7:34 mark, before recording another helper later in the period to make it a 6-0 Mount advantage. Matt Haggerty buried the team's final goal of the frame off a feed from Joe Bethke to push the lead to 7-0 at the end of one. The seven goals were the most by the Mount in any quarter this season. The defense continued to stifle the Seahawks into the second quarter, and the Mount added three more in the stanza from DiPretoro, McCarthy, and Mastro, to take a commanding 10-0 lead into the halftime break. Wagner's Spencer Kaufman notched the first goal of the second half at the 11:30 mark of the third quarter, but the Mountaineers scored the final four of the period, on goals from four different players, to open their largest lead of the game, 14-1, heading into the fourth. Both teams scored two apiece in the final frame, as the Mount closed out the 16-3 win. McCarthy assisted on both of Mastro's goals in the quarter to tie the program record. The Mount finishes the season at 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the NEC, while Wagner rounds out the year with a 4-10 overall record and 0-6 mark in NEC play.
