Junior midfielder Jack Ware (Baltimore, Md. / Towson) scored on the doorstep off a feed from senior attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) just 59 seconds into overtime to lift the 18th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory over 20th-ranked Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Hornets (10-5, 7-1) had tied the game at 9-9 with just 16.6 seconds remaining in regulation. Lynchburg junior midfielder Kevin Rodgers slid a shot just inside the base of the left post on a dodge from 11 yards out to send the game into an extra period. W&L (11-4, 8-0) junior midfielder Jack Hodgson (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) won the faceoff to open the overtime session. After each team had opportunities to pick up the ground ball, the Generals eventually gained possession. Shortly thereafter, Witherell dodged from behind the cage, drawing a slide from the inside defenseman. Ware filled the hole left by the slide and Witherell found him on the doorstep for a lefty shot off the hip of Lynchburg senior goalkeeper Patrick Cornelius. The Generals had trouble matching the Hornets' physical play early in the contest and Lynchburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 8:50 left in the first period on a pair of goals by junior midfielder Colin Dean. W&L eventually settled into the contest and tied the game before the end of the quarter on unassisted goals by sophomore midfielders Stuart Greenspon (Aldie, Va. / Episcopal) and Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy). The Blue & White took its first lead (3-2) on a goal by first-year attackman Garrett Mize (Dallas, Texas / St. Mark's) off an assist from junior midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) at the 13:18 mark of the second quarter, but the Hornets responded with a goal just 12 seconds later and eventually carried a 4-3 lead into the half. W&L knotted the game at 4-4 on a goal by Ware just 1:02 into the second half, but Lynchburg got two straight tallies from senior attackman Evan Lombardo for a 6-4 lead with 7:57 left in the third quarter. The Generals assumed the upper hand (7-6) on goals by Ware and A.J. Witherell to start the fourth period, and the teams traded goals back-and-forth four times before Rogers tied things up with just over 16 seconds left. W&L held a 39-34 edge in shots, a 30-28 advantage in ground balls and won 15 out of 23 faceoffs. The Generals controlled the action in the second half and overtime, especially at the Faceoff X, where the Blue & White won 12 out of 14 draws after the intermission. Ware paced the Generals' offense with four goals, while A.J. Witherell totaled one goal and two assists. Mulholland and Greenspon registered two goals each, while Mize had one goal and one assist. Hamill chipped in a pair of assists and Hodgson finished 15-of-23 on faceoffs. Defensively, senior close defenseman Paul Callahan (San Rafael, Calif. / Marin Catholic) recorded six caused turnovers and two ground balls, while sophomore Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) played all 60 minutes in goal and posted seven saves. Lombardo, Dean and junior attackman Trammel Robinson each registered two goals to lead the Lynchburg offensive effort. Cornelius stopped nine shots in goal for an Lynchburg team that saw its six-game winning streak snapped. Washington and Lee, which has now won seven straight, will return to action on Wednesday when it hosts Randolph for a 7:00 pm contest.
