VILLANOVA, Pa. – In a matchup on Tuesday afternoon, the Villanova women's lacrosse team defeated Army 16-8, who was undefeated walking into the Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats had an impressive showing from many individuals yet again this season and improve to 5-3 on overall. The Black Knights are now 7-1 overall and will begin conference play on Saturday against No. 16 Loyola. To start the contest, Villanova jumped out to a 3-0 lead within the first four minutes of action. Ashley Lynch, Liz Trojan and Brittany Bruno were the first three on the board for the Wildcats. Trojan assisted on Lynch's goal and scored her goal on a free-position shot. Lynch tallied an assist of her own on Bruno's goal. After the Wildcat's run, Army answered back with two goals each from Manuela Cortes and Samantha Stewart to make it a one-point game with 20 minutes remaining in the half. The next ten minutes rolled on without a score from either opponent. It was not until it read 9:26 on the clock that Villanova went on their second scoring run. Nicole Concannon put one in to score her third of the season and Trojan followed behind a minute later with her second of the contest after receiving a pass from Kim McDonough. The Black Knights counteracted again with two more goals, again one from Cortes and this time one from Samantha Stewart. The pair's goals cut Nova's lead to 5-4. A minute later, Katie Comerford converted on a pass from Concannon on a man up position and gave the 'Cats a 6-4 lead headed into halftime. The Wildcats started the second half the same way they began the first. McDonough scored the first goal and assisted on the third to Devin Hassinger. Grainger Rosati scored the middle goal to tally her seventh on the year and put the 'Cats up 9-4. Army was able to break up Villanova's scoring streak on a man-up goal from Stewart. Again, the Wildcats went on a run, though, this time they connected on five uninterrupted goals to take their largest lead of the game at 14-5. Lynch started and ended the goal streak and assisted on one other to leave her with five points on the afternoon. McDonough, Trojan and Rosati also netted in one more of their own. Trojan scored on another free-position shot and Rosati received a pass from Lynch. Cortes, Stewart and Raymond each went on to score Army's last three goals of the contest to give the team eight total. Cortes and Stewart led their team with three goals apiece and Juliana Dworschak and Jackie Battan led the team with four draw controls each. Army's Maddie Bruns and Hannah Slomkowski each saw time in the net and recorded two and five saves respectively. Trojan and Rosati each struck again for the 'Cats to give their team a final tally of 16. Trojan led the team with five points on four goals and one assist. Lynch also recorded five points on three goals and two assists. McDonough followed behind with four points on two goals and two assists and also led the team with four draw controls. Rosati also had four points on a hat trick and an assist. Moro spent the entire contest in the net and tallied seven saves on 24 shots faced. The Wildcats led the Black Knights in shots, shots on goal and draw controls. The two opponents were tied in saves and ground balls, but Army led in free-position shots and tallied five fewer turnovers. Villanova is now on a three-game win streak and looks to stay hot headed into their next contest on Saturday, Mar. 16 when they welcome the Richmond Spiders at 1 p.m.
