Canisius ran off 11 unanswered goals during a 36:09 span to erase an early deficit and cruise past Marist, 16-5, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at Tenney Stadium in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Senior Connor Kearnan and sophomore Mathieu Boissonneault finished with eight points apiece as Boissoneault scored six goals and added two assists while Kearnan pitched in three goals and five assists to power a Golden Griffins (5-4, 2-0 MAAC) attack that established a season-high for goals with the win. Senior Steven Coss pitched in three goals and one assist and fellow senior Ryan McKee chipped in a pair of tallies. Gannon Morrison recorded three goals while Avery Nesmith and Joe Tierney added single tallies for the Red Foxes (2-9, 1-2 MAAC). Trailing 1-0 after Morrison opened the scoring just before the 11-minute mark of the first quarter, Boissonneault tied the game at 1-1 just past the midway point of the opening frame to ignite the game-changing run that lasted more than 36 minutes and allowed Canisius to build a ten-goal cushion. The Griffs closed the first with goals from McKee and Boissonneault to build a 3-1 lead before the using a pair of tallies from both Kearnan and Boissonneault and a last-second strike from Coss during the second to take an 8-1 lead into the halftime break. Canisius continued its dominance during the opening stages of the third quarter as it opened the second half with tallies from McKee, Boissonneault and junior Mario Caito to stretch its advantage to double digits, 11-1, before the midway point of the frame. Morrison finally snapped Marist's scoring drought by notching his second of the afternoon with a little less than five minutes to play in the third, but Canisius responded with four of the next five goals to take their largest lead of the game, 15-3, early in the fourth. The Red Foxes responded with back-to-back tallies from Morrison and Tierney to pull within 10, 15-5, but senior Keith Pravato tallied his third of the campaign with 6:24 remaining to close out the scoring. Senior Liam Ganzhorn posted nine saves between the pipes for Canisius. Brian Corrigan tallied eight stops in goal for Marist. Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments "No conference game is easy and today was no exception, but we really did come together in all three facets of the game as our defense, offense and faceoff executed the game plan and that allowed us to get rolling as a unit and it made a huge difference in what we were able to do in all areas of the game. It allowed us to get into a rhythm and that made the biggest difference in terms of us being able to come out with a big victory in conference play. "During our 11-0 run we were winning faceoffs and getting possessions. We were really smart with the ball overall, but especially during that stretch. We did not have any turnovers that hurt us like they have in past games. When we had to go play defense, the guys back there were fresh and able to bring their A game every single time. The fact that it was a balanced game for our team made a huge difference as it meant that we were able to have that success all throughout the field and complement each other. "Anytime you get a conference win its huge, but doing it on the road is even better. We know that we've got a lot of work to do in order to get prepared for Detroit Mercy next weekend, but it's exciting to get wins in our first two games to open up conference play. We'll take a couple of days to refresh after this run of five games in 14 days and then we'll get back to work to make sure we continue to do the things that make us successful." Game Notes • Canisius improved its all-time record against Marist to 12-15 with Saturday's victory. • The Griffs established a season low for goals allowed as it held an opponent to single-digit goals for the first time this season. • Canisius also established a season high for goals scored on Saturday, surpassing the previous season high of 14 set against Furman on Feb. 24. • The Griffs held a 45-27 shot advantage for the contest, highlighted by a 23-11 margin during the first half. • Sophomore Mathieu Boissonneault recorded his third hat trick of the season with his six-goal effort on Saturday. • The six goals by Boissonneault were the most by a Canisius player since Simon Giourmetakis scored six times since an 11-7 win against Manhattan on March 24, 2012. • Senior Connor Kearnan tallied five or more points in a game for the fifth time this season with his eight-point effort on Saturday. His eight-point performance moved him into sole possession of seventh place on the program's career points chart (147). • With his five-assist effort on Saturday, Kearnan jumped into sole possession of third place on the program's single-season assists chart (32) after beginning the day in ninth place. • Senior Steven Coss posted his second hat trick of the season with his three-goal effort on Saturday. Up Next • Canisius returns home April 7 to host MAAC opponent Detroit Mercy in a 7 p.m. contest at the Demske Sports Complex. • The contest will serve as the team's senior day, with the program's 12 senior student-athletes being honored in a ceremony prior to the start of the game.
