WASHINGTON - The American University women's lacrosse team (6-4, 1-1 PL) opened its home Patriot League slate with a win on Saturday, outlasting Army West Point (7-3, 0-2 PL) with a 12-10 final score. AU's current 6-4 record is the most wins for the team since 2013 when the Eagles went 8-10 overall. HOW IT HAPPENED Emma Vinall paced AU with her fourth +5-goal performance of the season, scoring six alongside her four ground balls and two draw controls. Leah Brennan added two for American while four other Eagles added one goal each. Sydney Fry and goalkeeper Fiona Geier each picked up a team-high four ground balls alongside Vinall while Brennan pulled down four draw controls. Of the Eagles' 12 goals, six were off assists and another four were free position shots. Geier led the team from goal with nine saves. The Black Knights were also led by a hat trick performance with Manuela Cortes putting away three goals followed by Samantha Stewart, Caroline Raymond and Jackie Brattan with two each. Maddie Burns and Hannah Slomkowski shared responsibility in goal with Burns pulling down seven save and Slomkowski earning two. Army struck first, putting away a free position shot in the first three minutes before the Eagles took control of the game with a 3-0 run behind efforts from Vinall and Brennan. The two teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the half but the Black Knights had the final say, putting away a pair of goals in the final 3:00 to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the break. AU was back in control right off the bat in the second half after a free position shot from Jade sparked a 4-0 run to give the Eagles an 11-7 lead with 10:00 left in the game. Army snuck back within one after three unanswered goals, but Brooke Stapleton secured the win with her only goal of the afternoon after the team's ninth free position opportunity with 33 seconds left on the clock. NEXT UP The Eagles will return home to host No. 11 Loyola Maryland at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. For the latest on American Lacrosse, stay tuned to AUEagles.com and follow the team on Twitter @AU_Lacrosse.
