WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team picked up its first Patriot League win of the season after defeating Holy Cross, 19-13, on Wednesday afternoon at Michie Stadium. The Black Knights (8-3, 1-2 Patriot League) had contributions from all over the field in the program's first-ever victory over the Crusaders (3-7, 1-2 Patriot League). Jackie Brattan paced an offensive attack that saw eight different Cadets tally a score. The sophomore netted a career-high six goals, while adding six draw controls and a pair of ground balls. Olivia Carter posted her first collegiate hat trick and paired her trio of goals with an assist for four points. Manuela Cortes, Caroline Raymond, Rilee Scott and Megan Raftery each notched two goals in the contest. Raymond teamed up with Samantha Stewart as the top-two facilitators, combining to dish out seven helpers. Stewart showed her presence on the draw as well, coming away with eight draw controls. Defensively, Nia Crump, Charlotte Spencer and Scott combined for seven caused turnovers, while three other Cadets had at least one. In between the pipes, it was Burns who shined for Army as the junior goalie recorded 15 saves. ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES Brattan tallied five or more goals in a game for the second time in her career. The second-year attack took sole possession of fifth in all-time points with 60. It was her seventh hat trick of the season. Raftery took sole possession of seventh in all-time goals with 29. With her three assists, Raymond tied Cortes for sixth in all-time helpers. Crump catapulted her way to second in all-time caused turnovers after recording three against the Crusaders. Stewart handed out a career-high four assists. Burns set a season-best in saves. Army put 28 of its 38 shots on goal. The Black Knights went 14-of-16 on clears. The Cadets held the advantage on the draw, 21-12. Twelve of Army's 19 goals were assisted on. It marked the second time this season that the Cadets notched double-digit assists in a game. HOW IT HAPPENED It was a back-and-forth affair to begin action as Army and Holy Cross traded goals for the opening 13:41, which resulted in both sides being even at 4-4. At the 12:30 mark, a Scott score sparked a 4-0 run for the Black Knights, giving Army an 8-4 advantage. During that stretch, the Cadets shared the ball and all four scores were assisted on. Each side would tack on a pair of scores before the first half came to an end and the Black Knights went into the break leading, 10-6. Army was first to strike in the second half after Brattan recorded a hat trick following a free position score to put her team up by five. However, Holy Cross began to get into rhythm offensively and made it a one-goal game following a 4-0 run that lasted just over five minutes. The Crusaders' run was halted though once Cortes scored a pair of goals in less than 25 seconds. Holy Cross would get one back, but the Black Knights outscored their Patriot League foe, 6-2, over the final 14:55 to secure the home win. UP NEXT Army will head to Bethlehem, Pa., on Saturday for a 6 p.m. showdown against Lehigh.
