The Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team honored its 14-member senior class prior to the game and then jumped out to a big lead and held on for a 19-14 win over Canisius to clinch a berth in the 2018 MAAC Tournament. With the win, the Bobcats are 7-5 on the season and 4-0 in the MAAC with two games left to play, alone in first place. Quinnipiac still has tough road games left at Marist and Monmouth, but at least one of the other four teams fighting for the five playoff spots is guaranteed to end with three losses. Canisius slips to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the MAAC with the loss. Freshman attack Jake Tomsik had four goals and two assists to lead the Quinnipiac offense, while junior attack Foster Cuomo had four goals and one assist. Senior midfielder Brian Feldman, one of the 14 seniors honored prior to the game, and junior attack Mike Fletcher added hat tricks. Quinnipiac led 11-6 after a high-scoring first half and stretched the lead all the way up to 19-7 with 8:51 left to play. Then Canisius rattled off seven unanswered goals over a span of 4:48, the last coming with 3:02 left to create some anxious moments, but the Bobcats were able to hang on the rest of the way. Canisius tied the score 5-5 early in the second quarter, but the Bobcats took control with a 6-0 run. Fletcher gave the Bobcats the lead for good with 8:42 left in the half and senior Ryan Corcoran followed with another goal 50 seconds later. Feldman scored his first with 7:13 left in the half, and then fed Corcoran on an extra-man opportunity with 6:50 to go to cap off a rapid 4-0 run over a span of less than two minutes. Tomsik then added two more goals at the 5:28 and 2:00 marks to stretch the lead to 11-5, before Canisius scored the final goal of the half. Quinnipiac added a 7-0 run in the second half to turn a 12-7 lead into a huge 19-7 advantage. Freshman defender Matt Di Lella scored his first collegiate goal to start the run, and Cuomo capped it off with his fourth with 8:51 left. Senior Will Vitelli was 22-33 on face-offs. Vitelli and senior long-stick midfielder Adam Bellamy tied for the team lead in ground balls with eight apiece. The 14 seniors honored pregame were Adam Bellamy, Jason Brigagliano, Blaise Buffalino, Anthony Carchietta, Carson Cocco, Ryan Corcoran. Alex DiSalvo, Brian Feldman, David Glynn, Ryan Lawson, Joe Murphy, Riley Palmer, Mike Ruane and Will Vitelli. The Bobcats return to action on Friday for a road game at Monmouth beginning at 4 p.m. Print Friendly Version
