The Army West Point women's lacrosse team continued its winning ways after defeating Bucknell, 15-5, in the regular season finale on Thursday night at Michie Stadium. It was a strong finish to the 2019 campaign as the Black Knights (13-4, 6-3 Patriot League) won six of their last seven and set program records in overall and league wins. With the victory over the Bison (4-13, 2-7 Patriot League) and Navy's win against Boston University on Thursday, Army locked up the third seed in the Patriot League Tournament. The Cadets will take on the winner of tomorrow's game between Lehigh and American in the quarterfinal round at Michie Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Black Knights received contributions from all over the field against Bucknell and were led in scoring by a five-point effort from Jackie Brattan. The sophomore attack posted four goals and her first assist of the season. Samantha Stewart and Caroline Raymond also tallied hat tricks with three goals apiece. Cameron Manor and Taylor Andrews each chipped in with two goals, while Manuela Cortes tallied one. Rilee Scott and Olivia Carter effectively set up their teammates, combining for five assists. Defensively, Maddie Burns had a solid showing in goal after coming away with 10 saves to hold the Bison to single-digit goals. ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES Brattan notched her 11th hat trick of the year. Raymond recorded the sixth hat trick of her freshman campaign. It was the eighth hat trick of the season for Stewart. Scott handed out a career-best three assists. Stewart and Brattan totaled six draw controls apiece, while Juliana Dworschak added five. Cortes tied her career-best mark of three caused turnovers and tallied four ground balls. Burns improved to 11-2 on the season. The junior netminder posted double-digit saves for sixth time this year. The Black Knights improved to 7-0 when holding the opposition to single-digit goals. The five goals allowed was the fewest since limiting Wofford to four on March 8, 2018. Seven of Army's 15 goals were assisted on. The Cadets outshot the Bison, 33-20. Seventy percent of Army's shots were placed on goal. The Black Knights won 17 draw controls compared to the Bison's five. HOW IT HAPPENED Army got off to a hot start by outscoring Bucknell, 6-0, over the first 10 minutes of action. Brattan and Raymond were responsible for four of the goals during that run, while Stewart and Andrews each added a score. The Black Knights' offense cooled down for a bit and the Bison pulled with four, 6-2, after back-to-back scores. However, with 13:36 on the clock, Army got back into rhythm and a free position goal by Stewart sparked a 6-0 run to five the Cadets a double-digit lead before closing out the half. The Black Knights' defense put forth another dominant performance in the second half and limited the Bison to just two goals. Bucknell made it a nine-goal game, 13-4, with 25:12 on the clock, but was held scoreless for the ensuing 23 minutes. During that span, Army tacked on two goals before securing the 15-5 Patriot League home win. UP NEXT The Cadets will enter the Patriot League Tournament as the three seed and take on the winner of tomorrow's game between Lehigh and American in the quarterfinal round at Michie Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m.
