Despite two goals each from junior midfielder Ryan Reuling (Groton, CT) and rookie attackman Donald Schaumloffel (Wantagh, NY), the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse squad fell to visiting non-conference foe the College of Wooster, 13-9, on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex. With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 4-3 overall, while the Fighting Scots improved to 1-5.
Sophomore attackman Shaun Pierce (North Attleboro, MA) paced Wooster with four goals and two assists, while classmate Ted Wells (Manlius, NY) added three goals and a helper. Junior Cooper Pewitt (New Albany, OH) also notched a hat trick.
Sophomore goalkeeper Perry Cassidy (East Setauket, NY) moved to 4-3 while recording 11 saves for the hosts, while junior netminder Wesley Wagner (Collegeville, PA) picked up his first win of the season (1-5) while stopping 13 shots for the visitors.
WestConn outshot Wooster, 51-41, while also winning the battle for ground balls, 39-32. However, the Fighting Scots duo of rookie Joe Citera (Londonderry, VT) and junior Nick Gargaro (Ann Arbor, MI) combined to win 17-of-26 faceoff opportunities.
The Colonials jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Schaumloffel broke the ice, backing down low for a bounce shot into the top corner. Moments later, junior attackman Eric Caldwell (East Moriches, NY) – who chipped in with two points – dodged down the right alley and found sophomore middie Zak Santoemma (Madison, CT) for a blast from 10 yards out.
The Fighting Scots would rally with a 6-1 run. Pewitt ignited the spurt with an unassisted goal before Wells scored on the man-up, giving the visitors a 7-4 advantage midway through the second quarter.
WestConn emerged from a timeout and sliced the gap to 7-6 when Caldwell used his strength and barreled in for a scoring strike shortly before halftime.
However, Wooster seized control of the contest, outscoring the Colonials 4-0 in the third. The hosts would score three of the final four goals to keep the count close.
WestConn will look to rebound when they square off against visiting non-league opponent Cazenovia on Wednesday at 4 p.m., while Wooster travels to Capital at 7 p.m. that afternoon.
