QUEENS, N.Y. - In the first overtime game played at DaSilva Memorial Field since March 3, 2015, the St. John’s lacrosse team fell, 11-10, to Marquette on Saturday afternoon in Queens. John Wagner scored his third overtime goal of the season, and third of the game, for the Golden Eagles (5-4, 2-1 BIG EAST) with 32.9 seconds remaining in the extra session to hand the Johnnies (6-5, 0-2 BIG EAST) their first loss at home and third-consecutive overall. The defeat marked the first in overtime since the previously aforementioned date as St. John’s fell by the same 11-10 score to No. 6 Yale. The loss also is the first time the Johnnies have fell when leading by multiple goals in the final quarter since a 12-11 overtime loss at Jacksonville on February 21, 2015. St. John’s was 12-0 when leading by two-or-more in the fourth quarter following the defeat to the Dolphins. Jason DeBenedictis struck for a trio of goals, all coming in the second half, for his team-leading sixth hat trick of the season for the Red Storm. The senior also added an assist, collected two groundballs, and fired eight shots. Jack Zerrillo became the third player to also score a hat trick in the contest, tallying his final goal midway in the fourth quarter to help the Golden Eagles rally from a 10-8 deficit. Corey Haynes turned in another solid performance from the midfield for the hosts, scoring a pair of goals while dishing out two helpers for his second multi-goal game of the season and finishing just one point off his career high set earlier this season against Siena. After having his point streak come to an end at nine games, Colin Duffy responded with a three-point afternoon. The junior bookended the scoring for the Johnnies, striking for the team’s first and tenth goals while also tallying an assist for his ninth game of the season with at least two points. Joe Madsen extended his goal-scoring streak to 16 contests dating back to last season with a pair of strikes on six shots. The sophomore leveled the game at eight with just 0.5 on the clock in the third quarter to help the Red Storm rally from a pair of three-goal deficits. Mike Madsen also finished with a two-point outing, scoring a goal and adding an assist. Madsen, who became the fourth player to eclipse 20 points on the season against Stony Brook, led the game with nine shots. Cole Blazer shined in-between the pipes for the Golden Eagles with 16 saves on 26 shots on goal for the Johnnies. The senior goalkeeper made a key save on DeBenedictis in overtime to lead to the Wagner tally. Blazer became the first goalie to record 15-or-more saves in a game against the Red Storm since Drexel’s Jimmy Joe Granito last season. Matt Hanley was also sharp in net for St. John’s with 11 saves on 22 shots against. Since joining the team, the senior has posted double-digit saves in seven of the 11 games. The Bethpage native also collected a pair of groundballs. Marquette finished with a 32-22 advantage in groundballs, led by Noah Richard’s game-high eight. TJ Marron finished with six, just one off his career high. The Golden Eagles also dominated at the X by winning 18-of-24 draws. Zachary Melillo won all 18 for the visitors; while Justin Corpolongo won five for the Johnnies. Marquette became only the second team this season to reach the 40-shot mark, outshooting the Red Storm, 40-35, in the contest; however, St. John’s fired a season-high 26 shots on target. St. John’s surrendered a season-high six man-up opportunities in the tilt, but the penalty kill shined with a 5-for-6 day. Marquette earned the game’s first opportunities following an early penalty to Luke Roediger sent the Golden Eagles on the extra man just 14 seconds into the contest. The Johnnies killed off the one-minute violation, but the visitors struck just moments later as Connor McClelland tallied his tenth of the season to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. The goal was the fourth-straight game the Red Storm has surrendered the game’s first strike, having to play from behind once again. Marquette’s lead was short lived; however, as Duffy wheeled from behind the net and fired a shot through the five hole to quickly knot the game at one less than three minutes later. Turnovers plagued the next few minutes on both sides as each team committed multiples mistakes leading to neither side being able to establish flow or possession. After a Blazer save on Mike Madsen, the Golden Eagles regained the lead on the game’s next possession. Anthony Orsini finished off a one-touch passing play for a 2-1 advantage. Moments later, Corpolongo was penalized for slashing to push the momentum right back to the visitors. The St. John’s penalty kill did its job again by forcing a turnover and failing to surrender a shot over the man-up opportunity. Following the penalty, the Red Storm was able to turn some hectic play into an opportunity by striking in transition to level the game at two. Matt Stockfeder somehow escaped from a pair of oncoming defenders to find Duffy in the midfield with the pass, who quickly snapped a bullet to a streaking Joe Madsen, and the sophomore found the back of the net for the tic-tac-toe goal with 2:02 remaining in the opening quarter. The Johnnies found themselves in a similar position, knotted up after 15 minutes of play for the third-straight game. Marquette once again took the lead back early in the second frame as John Wagner scored his first of the contest, but the Red Storm responded again just over three minutes later. Mike Madsen found Haynes at the top of the attacking zone as the senior blasted a shot through the legs of Blazer to tie the game at three. Following the goal, the Golden Eagles took over for the remainder of the first half by tallying the next three to open up a 6-3 lead. The visitors struck for two goals in ten seconds before adding a third late in the stanza to head to the halftime break with a three-goal cushion. St. John’s looked to grab control of the second half on the third quarter’s opening possession by quickly cutting the advantage to 6-4 on Haynes’ second of the afternoon. The senior took his defender one-on-one and beat him to the goal before firing a left-handed shot into the top shelf, but again Marquette wasted no time in responding by restoring its three-goal lead just 35 seconds later. Once again looking to rally, Mike Madsen had a golden opportunity stymied by Blazer but Haynes fought for position to win the groundball and earn another possession for the hosts. There, Madsen wasn’t denied as the sophomore fired a shot through Blazer to bring the deficit down to 7-5 with 10:27 to play in the stanza. After both teams killed off a man-up opportunity, Marquette was sent to the box against for a 30-second offside penalty. This time, it was DeBenedictis scoring his sixth tally with the extra man this season to cut the lead to one for the first time since the second quarter. With less than two minutes on the clock in the third, the Golden Eagles struck again when Wagner went top shelf for his second of the game for an 8-6 lead; however, the final 1:46 of the frame belonged to the Johnnies. Due to some miscommunication by the Marquette defense, DeBenedictis was able to work himself free to his favorite spot on the field as the senior fired a shot into the top corner before the Johnnies struck again to tie the game at eight to end the third. With 22 ticks remaining in the period, Hanley made a great defensive read on the ball to intercept a pass from behind the net and pushed the ball forward for a final effort towards goal. Haynes fired a shot from near the midfield logo that caromed right to Joe Madsen and the sophomore deposited the rebound with 0.5 seconds on the clock to tie the contest after 45 minutes. Carrying all the momentum into the fourth quarter, St. John’s grabbed its first lead of the game when DeBenedictis capped off his hat trick with another shot from distance that beat Blazer with 12:49 to play. After a Hanley save and a Chris Buscemi forced turnover on the next possession, the Johnnies doubled their lead when Duffy used the turf to bounce a shot past Blazer for the 19th of the season for number 19 and a 10-8 advantage with 8:36 to play. It was Marquette’s turn to rally in the middle of the final frame, tying the game with back-to-back goals over a 1:20 span. Both teams had great chances in the final minutes of regulation as Blazer made a trio of stops before Hanley answered with a pair of his own to send the game into overtime. In the extra session, it was Hanley who made the first big play as the senior turned in his best save of the afternoon with a stick save to give the Johnnies an opportunity to win. Blazer made his 16th save of the game on a long-range shot from DeBenedictis before Duffy’s follow-up try from the side of the cage was blocked by the defender and gave the ball back to the Golden Eagles. Wagner won the game with a great move to the net and deposited a shot into the top-left corner to complete his hat trick and sent the visitors back to America’s Dairyland victorious. St. John’s will hit the road for the final time in the regular season next Saturday with a visit to the Mile High City against Denver.
