Making a case for itself in the Southern Conference standings heading into the regular season finale next weekend, Jacksonville University men's lacrosse held off a late rally by Furman to return to Duval with its first road win of the season – a 12-11 victory over the Paladins, Saturday afternoon. "While our team continues to find ways to make it interesting, today was a huge win against a quality opponent. More importantly, we learned how to win on the road," stated head coach John Galloway. "I was extremely proud of our execution on the defensive end. We forced turnovers with aggressive defense and a belief in our system. I was also encouraged with our shooting efficiency despite some incredible stops from Furman." Now 6-6 overall and 4-2 in the SoCon, the Dolphins combined for nine goals in the second and third quarters to push ahead of the Paladins (3-9, 3-3 SoCon) and led by as many as five, 10-5, heading into the final 15 minutes. The hosts pushed back with its lone offensive weapon in Will Holcomb, who paced Furman with nine points behind seven goals and two assists. Not to be deterred, the Dolphins used a heads-up play to seal the victory. Senior McLean Chicquen popped in the game-winner from the left alley with 53 seconds remaining on an empty net as Paladin goalie Alec Van de Bovenkamp left the crease looking to cause a turnover. Chicquen's goal gave the Dolphins an insurance tally at 12-10, which proved crucial as Furman found an answer with 28 seconds remaining to come within one. Senior Hunter Forbes won the ensuing face off – his 21st of the day – and the Dolphins relied on senior Ryan Beville's athleticism to dodge Paladin double- and triple- teams and run the clock out. With his six ground balls and two caused turnovers, Beville became just the 10th Dolphin in program history to cross the 100-ground ball threshold. He now stands at 102 career GBs. For the second-straight game and the fourth time this season, Forbes recorded 20 or more face off wins and finished the day 21-of-26 at the dot and was just one shy of matching his game-high with 16 ground balls. "If we want to accomplish our ultimate goals, we have to learn how to take care of the ball with more pride. After another All-American performance at the face off X for Hunter Forbes, we still found ways to keep it close because of our carelessness with the ball. It will continue to be a point of pride as we get back to work Monday for our home finale against a much-improved VMI squad in Duval." As a team, Jacksonville caused nine of Furman's 12 turnovers and held a 36-20 advantage in ground balls. Along with Beville's six GB-two CT performance, freshman Dixon Smith scooped three ground balls and also caused a pair of Paladin turnovers. Chicquen led the Dolphins with four points (2 goals, 2 assists), while junior Eric Applegate (3g) and freshman Jeremy Winston (1g, 2a) tallied three points each. Redshirt-senior Mitchell Parker (2g), junior Will Hendrick (1g, 1a), sophomore Dwayne Mattushik (2g), and freshman Gavin Dembeck (2g) all recorded two points apiece, and freshman Jack Dolan dished an assist. Junior Hunter Sells recorded nine saves between the pipes to earn the win and move to 6-6 on the year. Led by Holcomb's nine points, Furman also saw multiple-point performances from Jonah Moore (1g, 2a) and Lou Yovino (1g, 1a). Van de Bovenkamp finished the day with 12 saves in the loss. The Dolphins close out the regular season at D.B. Milne Field next Saturday, April 28 when they play host to VMI at noon.
