Cal (0-1) came out on fire in its first game in nearly a full calendar year by scoring on four of its first five possessions and led unbeaten UC Davis (3-0) by an early count of 4-3 before the Aggies scored the next five unanswered goals and never looked back en route to a 14-8 victory over the Golden Bears on Friday at California Memorial Stadium. Cal's first three goals came unassisted from Maya Lawliss (28:49), Amanda Morse (26:08) and Quinnlyn Mason (25:29) before Mason assisted on a Catherine Roxas' score with 21:39 to go in the first half to give the Bears their final lead of the game at 4-3. Davis took control of the game shortly after with a run of five straight goals from Alex Agnew (19:47), Kendall Seifert (17:57) on assist from Agnew, Maddie Myers (15:23), Mia Lawrence (13:17) and Kendall Seifert (10:06) on an assist by Lawrence. After its first five possessions, Cal would score only once more until the final minutes of the game on a Marisa Kuberra goal that cut the Aggies' lead to 8-5 with 3:21 to go in the first half on an assist from Zaccaro. Larson would score the game's next four goals with both the final two of the first half on an assist by Agnew and unassisted and the first two after intermission also both unassisted. UC Davis increased its lead to 14-5 on Siefert's second goal with 21:11 remaining in the game on an assist from Myers and an unassisted goal from Agnew with 20:41 to go. Cal would hold the Aggies scoreless the remainder of the way and add goals from Nikki Zaccaro (6:25), Mason (5:43) and Kuberra (1:21) with Zaccaro assisting on Mason's score. "Our offense started off strong tonight but after that we got a little comfortable even playing against a very good team," head coach Brooke Eubanks said. "We need to work on our answer. We started off great but we need to be able to adjust in-game, see what the defense is doing and expose the opportunities they are presenting to us." Larson finished the contest with a game-high five points all on goals, while Agnew (4 points – 2 goals, 2 assists), Seifert (3 points – 3 goals), Myers (3 points – 2 goals, 1 assist), Lawrence (2 points – 1 goal, 1 assist) and Anna Hofgard (1 point – 1 assist) also got on the board for the Aggies. Mason (2 goals, 1 assist) and Zaccaro (2 assists, 1 goal) led Cal with three points each while Kuberra (2 points – 2 goals), Lawliss (1 point – 1 goal), Morse (1 point – 1 goal) and Roxas (1 point – 1 goal) were the other offensive contributors. Taylor Mathieson (14 saves) picked up the win in goal to improve to 3-0 while Riley Drullinger had nine saves in a losing effort. Cal returns to action Sunday by hosting San Diego State (1-2) in a non-conference game at California Memorial Stadium beginning at 11 am PT. The Cal-SDSU game will live streamed. Under current health and safety guidelines, no fans are permitted to attend games on the Cal campus.
