The Wilkes University men's lacrosse team outscored visiting Wells College 12-1 in the deciding second quarter on way to a 22-7 victory Saturday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium. With the win Wilkes improved to 5-4 overall while Wells dropped to 1-5 on the season. The 22 goals was the second-most in program history, just behind the 23 goals scored by the Colonels last season against the same Wells squad. Luke Palladino (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) put the Colonels on the board first taking a pass from Eric Ormsby (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) and depositing a goal with 12:54 on the first quarter clock. Ten seconds later Andrew Moynihan (Easton, MA/Lawrence Academy) took a faceoff win and darted down the middle of the field for Wilkes' second goal. Wells cut the advantage in half with an unassisted goal from Quinten Battle at the 11:43 mark. Battle notched his second of the game tying the score at 2-2 with 9:28 left in the opening stanza. Alex Myers (Cortland, NY/Cortland) gave the Colonels the lead back at 3-2 when he took a pass from Ethan Weaver (Olney, MD/James Hubert Blake) and found the back of the net with 7:27 on the clock Weaver called his own number to start the second quarter moving past a defender before beating the goalie high near-side to push the lead to 4-2. After Wells scored its third goal of the game, John Wink (Glenside, PA/Abington) notched his 33rd goal of the season then assisted on Palladino's second strike of the game to give Wilkes a 6-3 lead with 10:26 left in the half. Palladino continued his scoring tear over the next four minutes adding his third and fourth goals of the game before Ormsby ripped a shot from the top of the box to give the Colonels its largest lead of the game up 9-3 with 6:50 left until the break. The scoring continued for Wilkes as Wink added four more goals over the final six minutes of the second quarter to give the Colonels a commanding 15-3 lead at the break. Connor Daly (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) and Kyle Sokol (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) added goals in the 12-goal second stanza, with Sokol's being the first of his collegiate career. JT Weitzel (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll), Max Brown (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) and Gavin Scofield (Stratford, CT/Stratford) scored the three Wilkes' tallies in the third quarter as the Colonels continued to lead 18-5 heading into the final frame. Jack Moyer (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg), Nico Lorenzo (Howell, NJ/Howell), Myers and Scorfield finished off the scoring for Wilkes in the fourth quarter as 13 different Colonels reached the point column in the non-league victory. Wink led all Wilkes scorers with seven points on five goals and two assists. Palladino followed with four goals and one helper while Brown finished with one goal and a team-high three assists. Ryan Lasher (Warrenton, VA/Liberty) and Anthony Scarfuro split time in net for Wilkes with Lasher starting and earning his first collegiate victory finishing with four saves. Scarfuro played the final 30 minutes making five saves. Wilkes held a commanding shot advantage at 56-28 while taking 28-of-33 faceoffs. Alex Loscalzo (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) was impressive in the circle winning 13-of-16 while Jamison Shaw (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) finished 9-of-10 on faceoffs. Wilkes concludes its non-conference slate next Saturday with a road matchup at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y.
