The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team clinched its third Southern Conference regular season title in program history and earned the top seed in the upcoming SoCon Tournament with a convincing 12-6 victory over visiting Air Force Saturday afternoon at Robins Stadium. Prior to the game, the Spiders honored their 10-member senior class with pregame festivities as this year's class has been part of all three regular season titles in the SoCon. Richmond improved to 9-5 overall on the season and 6-1 in SoCon play with the win, finishing tied with High Point top the standings. The Spiders earned the number one seed in the SoCon Tournament due to their 15-12 victory over HPU earlier this season. The 2018 SoCon Tournament will be held on campus at Robins Stadium with the two semifinal games being Thursday, May 3 and the championship game Saturday, May 5. The top-seeded Spiders will face fourth-seeded Furman in one semifinal contest while second-seeded High Point will meet third-seeded Jacksonville in the other semifinal The victory also marked the first all-time for Richmond against Air Force (5-10, 3-4 SoCon) and eliminated the Falcons from contention for the SoCon Tournament as only the top four teams earn a spot. The teams came out and went through the first quarter scoreless as both teams notched five shots but couldn't find the back of the net. The Spiders settled in and took control of the game in the second quarter, out-scoring the Falcons 6-1 in the second 15-minute period. Richmond got on the board early in the second quarter when Ryan Lanchbury scored his 14th of the season just a minute in. The Spiders scored two goals in a span of 13 seconds to take a 3-0 lead when Austin Brown scored with 10:07 remaining and Ryan Lee tallied a goal with the man advantage just seconds later. The Spiders continued their offensive push in the second quarter, taking a 5-0 lead with 1:05 remaining after goals from Mitch Savoca and Layne Collins. Air Force finally broke through with 56 seconds remaining in the first half when Trent Harper scored after winning the face off. Richmond answered right back though, scoring 36 seconds later to take a 6-1 edge into the locker room after Lanchbury scored his second of the game. Lee gave the Spiders a seven-goal advantage early in the third quarter with his second of the game while Lanchbury also tallied another goal as the teams traded goals in the third quarter. The Spiders took a 9-3 lead early in the fourth quarter when Brown recorded his second of the game. Air Force battled back and scored two-straight goals to narrow the gap to 9-5 with 4:50 remaining in regulation. The Spiders ended any doubt with three goals in a span of 1:05 to take a 12-5 lead with 48 seconds remaining. Tyler Shoults and Collins scored the first two goals during the run before Jack Worstell notched his second goal of the season to cap off the senior day fun for the Spiders.
