- A six-goal run in the final 17 minutes of the game would not be enough as the Long Island University men's lacrosse team fell to Siena, 14-12 on Saturday afternoon. Sean Boll made a splash in his collegiate debut, scoring a team-best five goals. Will Snelders finished with a team-high six points on one goal and five assists. Siena scored two early goals to take a quick lead. Boll would get the Sharks on the board with his first career goal, cutting the deficit in half. Boll nearly had his second of the day at the buzzer to end the first quarter, but the Siena goalkeeper came up with the stop. The Saints opened up the second quarter on a four-goal run, but Alex Russell had an answer to stop them, scoring his first goal of the season. Russell's goal kicked off a two-goal run as the Blue and Gold tried to climb back. The Saints responded with its fifth goal of the quarter. With just under a minute left of the first half, Boll scored his second goal, cutting the deficit back down to four goals heading to the locker room. After the Saints opened up the third with a goal, Snelders responded with his first goal of the season. Nick Grassa quickly put a stop to another two-goal run by the Saints with his first tally of the year. After Siena reached its largest lead of the game, a seven goal advantage, Snelders would find Boll twice within 17 seconds, to kick start a six goal run by the Sharks. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Sharks trailed by four. Snelders connected with Russell who kicked off the final quarter with his second of the day. After Blume won the faceoff, he took it down the field for the second goal in 30 seconds, causing Siena to take a timeout with just under 11 minutes to play. The timeout did not slow down the Sharks' momentum as Blume scored his second of the day nearly a minute later. Snelders connected with Boll once more, who net his fifth goal of the game to pull the Sharks within one with nine minutes left to play. The Sharks had a man up opportunity to tie the game, and Grassa got a shot off but it was saved by the goalkeeper. After Matt Riviera caused a turnover, Russell had a shot which was once again saved. With four minutes left in the game, the Saints scored their first goal of the fourth quarter to gain a little breathing room from the attacking Sharks. The Sharks fought hard until the end, but a turnover with 18 seconds left sealed the victory for the Saints. In his collegiate appearance in net, Will Mark finished the day with 18 saves. He closed out the fourth quarter, only allowing one goal. Blume won a team-best 10 faceoffs and picked up a team-high nine ground balls. The Sharks return to action next Saturday, February 15 when they host Wagner in the home opener. Opening faceoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
