PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team was down 8-2 at the half to Brown Saturday at Franklin Field. The Quakers made up all of that deficit, tying the game at 9-9 with 8:49 left in the fourth quarter on an absolute rocket shot by long-stick middie Connor Keating. However, the momentum of that goal never held. Only one more goal was scored in the game, and it came from the stick of the Bears' Stephen Hudak after a long individual run around the offensive zone. Brown was able to escape Franklin Field with the 10-9 win. Penn is now 5-6 overall, 1-3 in Ivy League play, while Brown improved to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in Ivy play. Brown scored Saturday's first three goals, but Penn got two of them back just 17 seconds apart as Kevin McGeary scored off a Sean Lulley feed and then fed Adam Goldner for another. Those would be the Quakers' only goals in the half, however, and instead it was Brown who scored once more in the first and four times in the second to go up 8-2 at the break. Lulley got Penn on the board quickly in the third quarter, snapping a goalless streak of 25:47, and then four minutes later Simon Mathias scored an unassisted goal which extended his point-scoring streak to 39 games. Michael Panepinto made it 9-4 Brown with an unassisted goal, but Mathias responded with two goals in a span of 51 seconds for the natural hat trick that cut the lead to three (9-6). McGeary made it 9-7 with 1:43 left in the third, then scored again just 2:42 into the fourth to make it a one-goal game, and the comeback was completed when James Farrell found Keating in transition and he rocketed a long-pole shot into the upper corner from near the top of the box. That sent the Penn team into bedlam as the game was tied for the first time all day. It would not last. As it turned out, Keating's goal would be Penn's last of the day. At the other end, Hudak's goal was a classic case of making something out of nothing as he circled the goal with the ball until he found a gap and worked his way into the heart of the Quakers defense and converted just ahead of getting hit. Penn outshot Brown on the day, 39-27, and had a few chances down the stretch but Brown keeper Phil Goss was equal to the challenges. He had four of his nine saves in the final period. At the other end, Reed Junkin had eight stops for Penn. Up Next Penn is at home again next Saturday, hosting Harvard at 3 p.m. That game is the second half of a doubleheader, after the women's game with Columbia at noon, and it will be Alumni Day at Franklin Field as well as Senior Day.
