HAMILTON, N.Y. - Colgate University scored just four goals in settled six-on-six offense, one in the final five seconds of regulation, and the No. 11 Loyola University Maryland men’s lacrosse team posted an 11-7 Patriot League win over the host Raiders on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds (6-3 overall, 4-1 Patriot League) forced 19 Colgate turnovers, and Jacob Stover made 10 saves, three coming on 1-versus-1 opportunities during the fourth quarter. Colgate (6-4, 2-3) entered the game ranked fourth in NCAA Division I with 13.67 goals per game, but the Raiders tallied two of their goals on extra-man and one in transition. Offensively, Jay Drapeau matched his career-high with four goals, a total that came on just six shots, while Pat Spencer had two goals and four assists for the Greyhounds. John Duffy added two goals and an assist. Loyola was credited with 11 caused turnover, six by Foster Huggins who was the nation’s leader with 3.38 caused turnovers per game prior to Saturday. The Greyhounds opened up a 5-1 lead in the second quarter, scoring the only three first-quarter goals during the game. Alex McGovern put Loyola on the scoreboard to develop a lead it would never relinquish, using a Spencer pass over the defense to get to the crease and score 2:21 into the game. Drapeau then tallied the first two of his four goals within 90 seconds. With under eight minutes to go in the first quarter, Drapeau split left off his defender and shot low and to the far-post for a goal at 7:51. He then scored with 6:22 left in the frame after Duffy initiated on the low, right side. Duffy came off a pick at goal-line-extended before throwing to Drapeau for a 15-yard sidearm 89 seconds later to make it 3-0 Greyhounds. Colgate broke through early in the second quarter as Sam Cleveland skipped a pass high over the defense to Griffin Brown for a high-to-low shot at 12:48. Drapeau then recorded his fifth game of the year with three or more goals with 10:45 in the second. Spencer fended off a Colgate check and shoveled an underhand pass to Drapeau for a shot off the left side, giving Loyola a 4-1 lead. Spencer added to the advantage with 5:27 to go before halftime, using a swim-move to get free from ‘X,’ and once topside he had a highlight-reel goal with an underhand low-to-high strike inside the top corner. The Raiders came right back, however, scoring seven seconds later as Collin Orr picked up the ground ball off a faceoff and sank a bouncer to pull Colgate within three. Loyola moved its lead back to four before halftime when Spencer used a pick below goal-line to throw to Duffy for a 15-yard stepdown goal 2:13 before the break. Colgate won the opening faceoff of the second half, but Paul Volante picked up a ground ball for Loyola off a mishandled Raiders pass. He hit Alex Johnson in-stride at midfield, Johnson ran it inside the box and scored his first goal of the year 27 ticks into the third, pushing Loyola up 7-2. The Raiders pulled within four midway through the third as Cleveland scored his first of two-straight at 7:29 on extra-man. He then tallied an unassisted goal at 6:16 to close the Loyola lead to three, 7-4. After more than four scoreless minutes, Drapeau caught a Spencer pass while cutting to the goal, and he used s stick-fake to beat Colgate goalkeeper Connor Mullen with 1:52 left in the stanza. Duffy then scored his second of the game 51 seconds into the fourth quarter off a P.J. Brown assist. Chase Wittich scored Colgate’s first settled-offense goal since 12:48 were left in the second quarter, tallying an unassisted tally at 11:29, making it a 9-5 Loyola lead. The Greyhounds, however, tallied the next two goals to pull away for good. Aidan Olmstead used his feet to run by a defender for a 12-yard shot off the left-side at 8:48 in the fourth, and Spencer restarted from the wide corner, ran past two defenders and got to the crease for his sixth point of the game at 6:17. Colgate made the Loyola lead 11-6 at 5:08 when Mike Hawkins scored on extra-man, and then Hawkins scored with under five seconds left to provide the game’s final scoring. Stover was at his best in the fourth quarter, making three saves in one-on-one situations with offensive players. Loyola won the turnover battle, having just 10 to Colgate’s 19. Five of the Greyhounds miscues came in the first 15 minutes. The Greyhounds are back on the road for their next game, a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday, April 7, at Lehigh University that will be televised live by CBS Sports Network.
