Junior Colin Rutan (Walnut Creek, Calif.) scored a walk-off goal with 1:46 to go in overtime to cap a 10-6 Denver advantage after the intermission and send the [5/5] University of Denver men's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over [RV/RV] Towson on Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The Pioneers improved to 10-7 in overtime games under head coach Bill Tierney, winning six of their last eight. Sophomore Ethan Walker (Peterborough, Ontario) led the Pioneers with six points on five goals and an assist. Junior Colton Jackson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) added two goals and a helper from the midfield, and junior Austin French (Danville, Calif.) quarterbacked Denver with two assists from X. Rutan added an assist with his game-winning goal. In his second career start, sophomore Josh Matte (Issaquah, Wash.) made six saves in the Denver victory. Towson opened the game with four of the contest's first five goals in the opening 30 minutes. The two teams played to a scoreless opening quarter, the first in a Denver game since the Pioneers battled Furman at Air Force's indoor facility Feb. 22, 2015. The Tigers broke the 0-0 score with 10:21 to go in the second on Jake McLean's first of two goals in the second quarter. Jackson scored Denver's only goal of the half with 2:59 to go in the second on a man-up try, but the Pioneers headed to the locker room down 4-1. The visitors struck first in the second half as well to extend their lead to 5-1 with 12:33 to go in the third. Denver responded to the four goal deficit with an 8-1 run spanning from 8:50 in the third quarter to 12:45 in the fourth quarter to take a 9-6 lead. Walker scored the first three Denver goals in the run to secure his 16th-career hat trick. The Denver sophomore's third goal started a 6-0 segment of the run for Denver. Jackson netted his 13th of the season to make it 6-5 Towson, and senior Connor Donahue (Groton, Mass.) pulled Denver all the way back to 6-6 with a man-up strike with 14:37 to go in the fourth. Baptiste scored his third and fourth goals in the last two games to give Denver its first lead of the day. From Donahue's goal to Baptiste's second saw 22 seconds go off the clock, tying for the sixth-fastest stretch of three-consecutive goals in Denver's Division I history. Walker capped the run with his fourth of the day and 27th of the season to put the Pioneers up 9-6. Towson wasn't done, scoring four of regulation's last five goals, including the game-tying goal to make it 10-10 with 29 seconds to play. Baptiste did not have to win a faceoff after McCaffrey's waved off goal at the end of regulation, because there was a second left on the Pioneers' man-up opportunity. Walker nearly completed his second sock trick of the season in overtime, but his shot was kept out by the 13th save of the day for Shane Brennan. Donahue's rebound sailed high, but out of a Denver timeout, Rutan beat his man and buried the game-winner with 1:46 to play in the first overtime and the Pioneers finished non-conference play at 6-2. UP NEXT: The [5/5] University of Denver men's lacrosse team, Presented by Your Hometown Toyota Stores, will open BIG EAST play next Saturday as the Pioneers begin a two-game road swing at [16/18] Georgetown. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m. ET/10 a.m. MT on Fox College Sports Atlantic and ESPN Denver 1600.
