The Butler women's lacrosse team closed out the 2021 season on Sunday falling 16-10 to Marquette on Senior Day. The Golden Eagles completed the weekend sweep, picking up their fourth BIG EAST win of the regular season.
How It Happened:
After going down 5-0 to start the match, with included an own goal, Butler took advantage of a man-up opportunity as Karina Latsko got the Bulldogs on the board. Butler grabbed three more quick goals to come within one (4-5) before the Golden Eagles added an insurance score.
With five minutes in the half, Ashley Guerra and Campbell Connors combined for three more goals, putting Butler up 7-6, just the second time the Bulldogs had a lead on a BIG EAST opponent all season. Marquette would score the tying goal to close the half at 7-7.
Marquette open the first ten minutes of the second period on a 4-1 run. The middle ten minutes off the half went by scoreless before Butler added goals from Kaley Attaway and Layla Tattersfield, cutting the Marquette led to 12-10.
Late penalties put two Bulldogs in the box, allowing the Golden Eagles to grab three straight man-up goals to put the game out of reach for Butler.
Amanda Rumsey played all 60 minutes between the pipes, picking up 18 saves.
Game Stats:
Amanda Rumsey set a new record for single-game saves with 18 in the contest, which doubles as a career and season-high for the senior in her last game
Ashley Guerra led Butler with three goals in the loss
Campbell Connors had two scores, giving her a team high 12 goals on the season
KK Callaghan had a team-high two assists to go along with her single goal
Senior Karina Latsko also had a score for the Bulldogs
Ella Squib led the team with eight draw controls, a season-high
Fellow freshman Leah Rubino was the cause of four Marquette turnovers
With a final record of 1-9 and 0-10 in the BIG EAST the Bulldogs have been eliminated from post-season play. Marquette (7-9, 4-6) will await results from around the conference to see if the weekend sweep was enough to advance to the tournament.
