The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team picked up its second straight league win as it topped Hartford, 10-8, at LaValle Stadium Saturday afternoon. It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the game, but the Seawolves held on late for the win. Stony Brook moves to 3-5 on the year, 2-0 in America East play. Hartford now sits at 3-5 on the season, 0-1 in the conference. Nagle's Reaction "This was a great team win for us today, I'm really happy with the way the defense came together," said head coach Jim Nagle. "We competed at the face-off X for the first time and we were able to shut down a really explosive offensive team, holding them to only eight goals, so there were a lot of positives for us. I'm proud of these guys and happy to get another league win." Highlights Hartford got on the board first, putting away two goals early in the first quarter. Freshman Mike McCannell (Orangville, Ontario) sparked the Seawolves with a goal at the nine-minute mark. Sophomores Chris Pickel, Jr., (Bayport, N.Y.) and Wayne White (Huntington, N.Y.) added back-to-back goals in under a minute to give Stony Brook its first lead of the day just inside the midway point in the opening quarter. The Hawks responded with two straight goals of their own, but White fired from distance on the feed from sophomore Tom Haun (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) to make it four-all. The Seawolves never turned over the lead in the second quarter as Jack Walsh (Miller Place, N.Y.) put away a pass from junior Owen Daly (East Rockaway, N.Y.), and Haun got one of his own on the assist from Walsh to answer the Hartford score and give Stony Brook a 6-5 lead at the break. Production slowed for both teams to start the third quarter but Hartford was able to take a brief one-goal lead after a pair of goals. Stony Brook capitalized on a pair of late-quarter face-off wins as junior Ryland Rees (Port Coquitlam, B.C) buried the feed from sophomore Cory VanGinhoven (Fort Mill, N.C.) and freshman Patrick Kaschalk (Windsor, Ontario) got on the board after a relay from Walsh. Sophomore Connor Grippe (Setauket, N.Y.) put the Seawolves up 9-7 late in the fourth quarter, but Hartford answered to return the difference to one goal with 2:11 remaining. Haun added an empty-net goal with 1:02 on the clock to seal the victory. Notes Walsh notched his fourth straight multi-point game as he helped lead the way with a goal and three assists. Sophomore Michael Bollinger (Holbrook, N.Y.) played the full game in cage and finished with eight saves while allowing single digit goals for the third time this year. Up Next The Seawolves will return to the road next weekend to take on in-state rival and top-ranked Albany on Saturday, March 31 at 4 p.m.
