With another stellar performance picking up 14 ground balls and winning 23 of 25 face offs, senior Hunter Forbes became the Jacksonville University men's lacrosse team's all-time program leader in ground balls. Tuesday evening as the Dolphins defeated Detroit Mercy, 15-8, at D.B. Milne Field. Forbes moved ahead of former Dolphin Cameron Mann (176) and now has 188 career ground balls. Forbes' performance highlighted a matchup that saw 14 penalties for 11:00 total minutes worth of extra-man opportunities for the teams. "I was very disappointed with our behavior tonight on the field. We didn't handle ourselves in the first half with maturity. I was encouraged to see us respond in the second half, but we pride ourselves on being the most respected. Our actions tonight did not resemble that," stated head coach John Galloway. "On a brighter note, Hunter Forbes was fantastic tonight; he is putting up All-American numbers. Our offense is starting to share the ball and we are going to be able to hold our guys accountable for the mistakes made tonight. Any time you can do that and still come out with a victory is a good day." Junior Will Hendrick opened scoring for the Dolphins (2-2) at the 11:34 mark in the first. Freshman Jeremy Winston then tallied two of his three goals – both unassisted, including one with 16 seconds remaining – to put the Dolphins ahead 4-3. Nine penalties in the second quarter made things interesting as 5:00 worth of extra-man opportunities were awarded. Both teams capitalized on a pair of man-advantages, but it was sophomore Dwayne Mattushik, who buried a dish from classmate Alec Drosos with just 2.1 seconds left, who gave the Dolphins a 6-5 lead at halftime. Senior McLean Chicquen (14:44) and junior Eric Applegate (13:23) added a pair of unassisted goals right out of the break. Despite the Titans (1-2) finding an answer to each of the Dolphins' three goals in the quarter, Jacksonville held a 9-8 lead heading into the final 15 minutes. Setting the tone for the fourth quarter, Forbes buried a pass from senior Ryan Beville just 16 seconds after he won the face off to spark the first of Jacksonville's six unanswered goals of the quarter. Applegate had a hand in three of the next four, as the Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. native dished out assists to senior Shawn Ewert (12:26) and Mattushik (8:24) before he scored his second of the night unassisted at the 3:25 mark. Ewert capped the Dolphins' quarter with 1:57 to play as the Dolphins bounced back for their second win of the season. The Dolphins held the advantage in shots (35-26) and nearly doubled up the Titans in ground balls (39-22). Junior goalkeeper Hunter Sells picked up 10 saves in the crease and improved to 2-1 in the net for the Dolphins. Mattushik, Winston, and Hendrick led the Dolphins with a trio of goals each, while Applegate recorded his fourth-straight 4+ point game behind a pair of goals and assists, respectively. The Titans were led by Brett Erskins three points (2 goals, 1 assist), while goalie Logan Shamblin posted six saves between the pipes. The Dolphins welcome No. 4 Ohio State this Sunday, Feb. 25 for the 2018 Moe's Lacrosse Classic, with opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
