The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team (7-5, 4-1 SoCon) survived a wild contest with Jacksonville (5-6, 3-2 SoCon) inside Robins Stadium on Saturday afternoon to come away with an impressive, 14-12, victory. The freshman stars shone brightest down the stretch in this one. Mitch Savoca scored three of his game and career-high four goals in the fourth quarter while also adding an assist earlier in the game. Fellow newcomer Ryan Lanchbury tallied the third hat trick of his career and added two assists to lead the team in points. This pair combined to score five of Richmond's six fourth-quarter goals that sealed this game. That other fourth-quarter score came from Teddy Hatfield who, with his three goals and an assist on Saturday, took sole-possession of the all-time points lead in program history. The junior now has 132 points in his career and passed J.P. Forester (130) to move into the lead with still a full season left to play in his career. While all of this wild scoring was going on, Spider goalkeeper and reigning SoCon defensive player of the week, Blake Goodman, was making 13 saves to match his second-highest tally of the season. Jacksonville started quickly, winning the opening faceoff and racing down the field to score in just six seconds. Richmond didn't wait long to respond. Ryan Lee cut through the middle and found Ryan Lanchbury wide open on the left side who canned his 14th goal of the season to even the tally with 13:44 to play in the first. Richmond applied quite a bit of pressure on the Jacksonville defense over the next 10 minutes, taking 10 shots and forcing the JU goalkeeper to make three saves. It was Jacksonville however that benefited from a Richmond mistake at the 4:15 mark. The Spider defense came up with a stop but a miscommunication and a bad pass resulted in an own goal that put the Dolphins on top, 2-1. The scoring came early and often in the second quarter. Jacksonville moved ahead 3-1 with a tally at the 12:33 mark but that seemed to be the wake-up call for the Spiders who came storming back after that. Austin Brown scored the first of what became a 5-0 run for the Spiders with an assist from Mitch Goldberg. Mitch Savoca followed with his 14th of the season less than a minute later, Brown added a second at the 7:15 mark, Teddy Hatfield continued the run with his first of the game with 5:31 left in the half and Ryan Lee capped it off with his 12th of the season to make it 6-3, Richmond, with 1:38 to go in the second. Jacksonville worked things out and scored with 45 seconds left then the two sides traded goals with less than five seconds to play in the half to send this one to the locker rooms with Richmond on top, 7-5. During that final sequence, Blake Goodman came up with a save and hit a sprinting Sean Menges in stride who strolled untouched to the goal and scored his second goal of the season. Jacksonville then won the faceoff and quickly made it down field to score as the buzzer rang out. Hatfield wasted no time extending the lead to start the third quarter. The junior took a feed from Lanchbury and buried his 25th goal of the season, second of the game, breaking the all-time points record in the process. With that score at the 13:22 mark, the Spiders were ahead, 8-5. The Dolphins were not about to go quietly. The Richmond defense surrendered goals at the 9:37, 7:31 and 4:17 marks to allow the visitors to climb all the way back and tie this one. With a man-up chance and 2:54 to play in the quarter, Brown fired a shot from the point that was met with an outstanding save. Jacksonville collected the ground ball and moved onto offense before calling a timeout with 15 seconds left in the penalty. Nothing came of it however and the two sides battled to a stalemate for the remainder of the quarter, sending the tie game into the fourth. The hot faceoff unit for Jacksonville continued to roll at the start of the fourth, winning the opening control and driving straight downfield to score and take the lead in just 13 seconds. Savoca answered with his second score of the game to knot this game at nine with 14 minutes to play. Doing everything he could to keep the Spiders alive, Hatfield buried his third of the game to make it 10-9 thanks to Lee's ninth assist of the season but Jacksonville answered less than a minute later to keep this one tied. As the clock dipped below 10 minutes to play, the Spiders began applying plenty of pressure on the Jacksonville defense. Shots from Hatfield and Lanchbury missed their marks but Mitch Savoca found his target to earn his second hat trick and put the Spiders back on top but once again that lead would not last long. Jacksonville answered with 8:45 to go to tie the game at 11. Not to be outdone, Ryan Lanchbury wasted little time capitalizing on his next scoring chance. Eric Haehl got in on the scoring with the helper to Lanchbury to move the Spiders hack into the lead, 12-11, at the 8:03 mark. The pace slowed considerably from here after seven goals were scored over seven minutes of action. The Spider freshmen flexed down the stretch in this one. Lanchbury buried his second-straight at the three-minute mark off an assist from Savoca to make it a two-goal game and after a JU answer Savoca got his fourth to make it 14-12 Spiders with 1:42 to go. That was how this one came to a close. The Spiders kept JU at bay down the stretch to secure their fourth SoCon victory and maintain first place in league play. Just two games remain in the 2018 regular season. The Spiders will travel to Mercer next weekend (April 21) for a date with the Bears before returning to Robins Stadium to close out the regular season against Air Force on April 28. Every game down the stretch is extremely important, as each will have postseason implications. Robins Stadium will play host the 2018 SoCon Championship Tournament May 3-5 where the top four teams in the standings at the end of the regular season will advance to play for the title.
