The Bellarmine lacrosse team pulled off one of the program's biggest upsets on Sunday as they toppled No. 18/19 Marquette 7-6 in double overtime at the Midwest Classic at Wisner Stadium. Brian Wall's goal with 2:16 remaining in the second overtime was the game winner as the Knights improved to 2-4 on the season and defeated a ranked opponent for the first time since March 31, 2015 when they knocked off a Marquette squad that was ranked No. 13. Bellarmine got a big game from freshman goalie John Hulsman, who recorded 13 saves on the day, allowing just six goals as Marquette fired 31 shots on the day. The Bellarmine defense was solid all game, but perhaps the biggest stop came in the first overtime as the Knights thwarted an extra man opportunity for Marquette with just one minute on the clock. In fact, the Knights had the last chance in the first overtime, but Wall's shot sailed wide. The Golden Eagles, who upset No. 4 Ohio State on Friday, never trailed in today's game until Wall's heroics to end the game. In fact, Marquette owned advantages in shots (31-23), shots on goal (19-14), face offs (12-4), and ground balls (31-25). The Knights' defense was up to the challenge, however, limiting the Golden Eagles to a 1-for-6 success rate in extra man opportunities, and Hulsman's 13 saves were six more than his counterpart Cole Blazer. The Bellarmine defense kept the game close in the early going despite Marquette owning a 12-4 shot advantage in the first period. Six of Hulsman's 13 saves came in the opening quarter, which ended 1-1 after Will Roshkowski connected on one of BU's four shot in the period. In the second frame, the Golden Eagles scored three in a row to take a 4-1 advantage, but Wall got one for the Knights to trim the deficit to two at the half. Bellarmine struck first in the third quarter with Ian Miller finding the back of the net to draw the Knights within one. Marquette and Bellarmine then traded goals to end the third period with the Golden Eagles holding a 5-4 advantage. Landon Trout evened the score 59 seconds into the fourth period. The Golden Eagles had a quick answer as Jack Zerrillo gave Marquette the lead again at the 12:35 mark. Nearly eight minutes later Morgan Macko scored his first goal of the game and eighth of the season to knot the score 6-6 with 4:42 remaining in regulation. Coming down the stretch, the Knights got off two shots and the Golden Eagles fired off one with 32 seconds but it was off target and the game went to its first overtime. In the first extra session, Marquette took control first but misfired on a shot after a shot clock warning, then turned it over on a shot clock violation. The Knights failed to take advantage as they turned it over in the offensive end as Marquette's Brendon Connolly picked off a pass. The Knights then came up with their solid man-down stop after Bellarmine's Josh When was whistled for a slash with exactly one minute remaining. Marquette again had the first opportunity in the second overtime, but Anthony Orsini's shot hit the side of the net, and Bellarmine gained possession. After a successful clear—their 20th in 22 attempts—the Knights called for a timeout with 2:53 remaining, and Wall's 14th goal of the season came on BU's only shot of the second overtime for the victory. The loss was the first of the season for Marquette, which falls to 3-1. The victory gives the Knights something to build on as their next game is BU's Southern Conference opener at High Point on March 17.
