UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team (6-5, 3-1 SoCon) fought off the Bellarmine Knights (2-8, 0-4 SoCon) on Saturday afternoon at Robins Stadium to earn its third Southern Conference win on the season on the strength of a trio of goals by Teddy Hatfield. The two sides combined for 31 shots but both goaltenders were up to the task. Richmond's Blake Goodman made nine saves while the Bellarmine keeper made 13 to keep this one close. Five different Spiders found the back of the net with Hatfield leading the way. Tyler Shoults added a pair to go with an assist while Layne Collins, Ryan Lee and Mitch Savoca all added one. Austin Brown was spreading the ball around all afternoon and came away with three assists. Lee was the one to get the scoring started in this one with his 11th goal of the season at the 9:37 mark in the first. Bellarmine answered, as would be the theme in that first quarter. Shoults canned his first of the game just over three minutes later but once again Bellarmine had answer at the 5:17 mark to make it a 2-2 game. Collins added his eigth of the season with 4:24 to go to give the Spiders a 3-2 leading heading into the second quarter. The second frame provided some fireworks. Savoca got things started with his 13th score of his debut campaign at the 9:02 mark. Hatfield scored his first two and a half minutes later, the first of his three-straight goals for the Spiders to help his team build a 7-4 lead at the break. The last of his goals came with just two seconds left on the game clock. Both defenses were on display in the second half. Tyler Shoults scored the lone Richmond goal with 2:34 left in the third quarter. Bellarmine added two more the rest of the way but it would not be enough to catch the Spiders who earned a third-straight SoCon win to remain unbeaten (5-0) at Robins Stadium this season.
