With just under nine minutes remaining, the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team (5-6, 1-3 NEC) found the back of the net to bring the game to its eighth and final tie. However, Saint Joseph's (6-3, 3-0 NEC) generated a 3-1 run to escape the tightly contested Northeast Conference battle, 14-12, Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field. How it happened… SJU struck first at the 13:03 mark of the first before Joe Saggese and Max Tuttle both connected to give SHU its first lead of the game, 2-1 (10:07). Hayes McGinley scored back-to-back followed up by a Julian Garritano goal for SHU. But another tally by the Hawks put the game in their favor, 4-3 prior to the second quarter's start. SHU and SJU traded goals in the second quarter's early goings before the Pioneers erupted for a 4-0 run to award the visitors the 7-6 lead as both clubs split for the locker-room. Saggese capped a five-goal spurt by SHU in the third quarter's seventh minute but the Hawks mirrored some of their foe's offense erupting for four straight goals, taking back hold of the lead before the end of the period, 10-8. Tuttle recorded the fourth quarter's first goal and both teams would trade tallies until the match was tied, 11-up, in the sixth minute. From there, SJU stepped back in front adding on a pair of goals by the 3:47 mark. Saggese blitzed another shot to help fill in SHU's deficit, down just one with 3:20 left. Saggese tried again less than a minute after but left his attempt wide. SHU proceeded to turn to turn the ball over handing control back to the hosts. SJU continued to stall, until 1:23 when a warning was administered. With 61 ticks pictured on the clock, SJU's Chris Blewitt put in a shot to put the game at bay. The numbers… Saggese's four goals placed him in the Pioneers' forefront again while the attack also added an assist. He also corralled three groundballs. Tuttle provided a hat trick while also supplied a pair of helpers. He also picked up three balls. Jake Giaquinto was a marquee on the defensive end tying a game-high seven groundballs and earning a caused turnover. TJ Fitzell (5) and Nick Albanese (4) also battled for groundballs, considerably. Brooks Dutton was SHU's only goalie on the afternoon and registered eight saves in the contest. Up next… The Pioneers will take the time to honor 11 of their seniors, Saturday, April 14 prior to an NEC clash with Wagner.
